Australian internet provider iiNet was slammed with more than 1000 breach notices over a 17 week period Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft.
iiNet is currently embroiled in a law suit brought against it by more than 30 claimants who allege the provider breached copyright laws by allowing its users to illegally download content from the web.
iiNet vehemently denies it actively encouraged its users to breach copyright laws. The case started on Tuesday at a federal court in Sydney and is expected to take several weeks.
The verdict could have far reaching effects for New Zealand and the rest of the world, and provide clarity on whether internet providers can be help responsible for actions taken by their users.

Who is responsable
This is a tricky one however, if the ISP is found to be responsible does this mean that every car company is responsible for the bad driving of its owners... the gun companies are responsible for the associated gun crime? where does it end.
How can any company be responsible for the individual crimes performed by the people who purchase its products or use its services.
If the ISP gets slammed for copyright theft... will it get slammed for other nasty downloads as well?.... is the world just becoming a regulated environment like China...i hope not.
Surely the individual has to take responsibility or it becomes to dangerous for companies to be in existence.
