An adrenalin rush for the risk-averse?
If you have always had a secret desire to be a risk-taking, dangerous daredevil and live on the edge (literally) but quite like being alive, too, a new Queenstown tourism venture could be just the ticket.
For $3750, you can now pretend to be brave, without actually needing to jump off a cliff in a wingsuit.
Touted as a “heart-stopping experience that’s not for the faint hearted,” Pure Adventure’s new tourist experience takes clients in a helicopter to watch legendary BASE jumper Chuck Berry jump off a cliff, before meeting him at the bottom for a spot of lunch.
According to the company, the trip is aimed at those who think they’ve seen or experienced everything and allows them to experience the adrenalin-rush of BASE-jumping first hand (well, from the relative safety of a helicopter, anyway).
“Have you ever imagined what it must be like to jump off a cliff?” asks Berry.
“Maybe you have, but more to the point is have you ever imagined what makes it possible for someone to put themselves in that position of wanting to jump enough, that they find themselves at the launch point. This does not happen by accident.
“This is the culmination, the coming together of fantasy, desire, faith, knowledge, ability and visualisation. Accepting a challenge of your own design, a brutal confrontation between one’s personal life and safety and putting yourself out on a limb, far from the safety we naturally yearn for.”
We will have to take your word for it Chuck.
The Queenstown daredevil, 42, pioneered BASE-jumping in New Zealand. An acronym for buildings, antennas, spans (bridges) and earth (cliffs) – or four categories of fixed objects from which to jump, it involves a freefall before opening a parachute at the last minute.
Berry, sponsored by Red Bull, was part of its Uncharted project along with American Miles Daisher and Canadian extreme skier and BASE-jumper Shane McConkey, before he died in the Dolomite Mountains in March this year.
McConkey failed to open his parachute in a ski-jump where he performed a double back-flip and free-fell but had trouble releasing his skis.
Owner of Pure Adventure Steve Robertson says Berry is an amazing athlete who personifies the extreme adventure enthusiast for which the resort is so well known.
“I’m sure there will be plenty of people who will just love to see him jump and have the chance to talk to him before and afterwards. I think the lunch time picnic conversations will be guaranteed to be interesting!”
