ASB today announced it would reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent by December 2012, based on 2008 levels.

The bank was committed to managing its impact on the environment responsibly and effectively while helping to build a sustainable future for all New Zealanders, chief executive Charles Pink said.

“We recognise that the way we manage our business and our resources has an impact on the environment and the community and we are committed to making the right decisions,” he said.

He said the target, based on 2008 levels, was an important part of the bank’s overall sustainable business strategy.

“It will help to drive ongoing improvements in efficiency and demonstrates our commitment to improved environmental performance.”

Other ASB initiatives already up and running include: upgrades to lighting and air conditioning in offices and branches, improvements in energy data systems and control mechanisms, automated overnight PC shutdown for all staff, green technology projects to improve energy efficiency, and encouraging staff to use video and phone conferencing technology instead of air travel.

“We believe it is important to take action now to achieve our business vision and deliver world class service to our customers, colleagues and community. Our environmental initiatives are an integral part of this commitment.”

ASB’s sustainable business manager Tanya Stocks told NBR the new initiatives were “just good business.”

“Some things are expensive within the programme, for example the move to virtualise all our servers, but most of it is pretty cost effective.”

She said simple changes such as changing printer settings to only print double-sided and black and white could make a big difference.
