Aussies to get new iPhone for zero dollars up-front

Optus has become the first of Apple’s three Aussie carriers to announce pricing for the new iPhone 3Gs - including special charges for tethering.

On several 24-month plans, the iPhone 3G S will be available for zero dollars.

The telco’s headline “Timeless” deal offers the new iPhone for no money up front, then $A99 which gives you unlimited calls and txt, and 1.5GB of mobile data.

Optus has also announced special charges for tethering an iPhone 3G S to a laptop to use as a modem.

Those on the $A99 Timeless plan will be exempt, but others who want to tether will be charged $A10 a month on top of their chosen data plan.

Although the Aussie media finds nothing special in Optus’ iPhone 3G S data pricing, we across the ditch can only marvel at its cost - which is at least half our rates.

1GB of mobile data, untethered, will cost $A19.99 as a add on to an Optus plan.

There are also two “Modem as Mobile” monthly plans for tethering (Vodafone NZ is allowing tethering on the iPhone 3G - enabled through the iPhone OS 3.0 upgrade - on regular plans).

One offers 2GB for $A24.99; the other 6GB for $A44.99.

Standalone iPhone 3GS pricing has yet to be announced, although Optus has pledged a $A100 discount for those who buy online.

The new iPhone will be available in Australia on June 26, and in New Zealand - where Vodafone will remain the sole carrier - on an unspecified day in July. Pricing has yet to be announced.

The iPhone 3GS was released in the US last week, initially with no tethering plans.

The iPhone 3G remains on sale, recast as a budget model.

The problem for us as far as unlimited data goes is the international data charges. I think it's time certain telco's get behind Kordia's projected 2nd international internet cable.

We're already being left behind, we need to get back in the game or see our international competitiveness wither and die.

I am currently on Timeless $129 p/m, they tell you it's unlimited calls to national landlines and mobiles, national SMS, MMS and free voicemail retrieval.

BUT, they don't tell you the landline does NOT incl. any 13, 1300, 1800 or basically any free or corporate/customer numbers, so if you think you could call Optus, your electricity company, or the bank and you are in the queue for 45 minutes, that 45 minutes is timed and will cost you around $30-$40 dollar each time!!! I got burnt because I thought what they offered was a perfect plan to ditch the homephone... I rang them and they blamed me for not reading the fine print... I can't wait to leave Optus, bunch of w**kers

So pls be sure YOU read the fine print and don't call any of those numbers if you can avoided.
