Avis to buy Chch-based Apex Rentals for $US29m plus fleet

BUSINESSDESK: Avis Budget Group, which operates the global Avis and Budget car rental brands, has agreed to buy Christchurch-based Apex Car Rentals for $US29 million cash plus the book value of its 4000-strong fleet.

New Jersey-based Avis expects to settle the deal next month, subject to customary closing conditions, it says. It also stands to receive earn-out payments if certain financial targets are met from the trans-Tasman operation.

"This transaction represents another step in our strategic efforts to expand our global network, in a market where we have considerable experience," says Patric Siniscalchi, Avis president of the Latin American and Asia Pacific regions.

"The transaction also provides us with additional opportunities with our portfolio of brands to meet the vehicle rental needs of all New Zealand and Australia visitors and residents."

Avis Budget's Australasian acquisition comes after rival Hertz Global last month spent $US2.6 billion boosting its share of the US market when it took over Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group.

Apex chief executive Phil Lennon, who set up the company in 1992, will stay in the rental company's management after the acquisition.

Shame. Apex was good value. I'll have to find another now.

Use Hertz, much better!

I've used all the main ones at various times. Have you? Apex were much more economical if you are not travelling on a business expense account or don't care how much you pay.

I recently used Apex for the first time at Auckland Airport, and found them excellent.
After a bad experience I had at Brisbane airport where despite prebooking a car, they would not let me take it away because I could not supply a mobile phone number,I avoid these multinationals.
I now use RedSpot in Australia.
Now the decision will be who to use in NZ from now on .

Hertz - Simple.

Try Omega Rental Cars, I have always had great service from them.

No Birds in Sydney and Perth are fantastic

I have used APEX in Brizzy, just after they opened in August last year. They were excellent. Used them again recently in Auckland, okay up there, no complaints.

Used Apex this year "Sun and Surf" deal. Ideal for those doing low km during visit. Will use again if same deal exists. Good company great New model Hyundai Elantra

As a former Apex employee I think it is a shame to see this. So much for being proud of being 'Australasia's largest independently owned car hire company' and ' The Kiwi Way' what a sell out

Believe this is a good opportunity for business to grow and shows how NZ entrpreuners can excell through hard work - good on them

Apex are a great car rental firm - have proven niche - key will be to keep it going so well - have hired in Queenstown and Auckland - excellent on both occasions

Its a long time ago since we used Apex.We were staying at the hotel across from their Office in Christchurch. Went to book a car and the owner,Phil didnt have any available but said you can have mine,His wife can pick him up from the office. That was his early days and the service was based on going the extra mile. Enjoy your well earned payment Phill.

Thanks Buck
Wife still hasn't forgiven me
