Bennett stands by release of solo mums' benefit data

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett is unapologetic for releasing the income details of two solo mothers who criticised Government policy, saying she did it to round out the story.

Jennifer Johnston and Natasha Fuller went public last week with their criticism over the scrapping of the training incentive allowance.

Today, the New Zealand Herald reported Ms Bennett's office had provided it with details of the Government benefits that the solo mums received.

Ms Bennett said while she did not ask the women's permission to release the information she felt they had taken the matter public by talking to the media, establishing a website and writing a blog.

"I felt that they were obviously willing to put their public details out there," Ms Bennett told reporters.

"Good on them, they're allowed to stand up and put their viewpoints forward by all means."

Ms Bennett felt the women had left out key information when telling their stories.

"The thing is there is the level of assistance there for people and we wanted them to be aware of that."

The women were misleading the public by releasing "selective information", Ms Bennett said.

"I think most New Zealanders will see that actually they've been given a real fair go."

Information from Ms Bennett's office showed Ms Fuller received $715 nett a week and Ms Johnston $554.

Ms Fuller gets $28 a week from the Training Incentive Allowance (TIA) and also got the allowance from 2004 to 2006.

In 2006-2007 she received $9560 under the enterprise allowance to start a cleaning business which had since closed.

Both women had used the TIA to help pay for university preparatory courses. They had planned to use the allowance to fund part of their university studies.

Ms Johnston wanted to study nursing and Ms Fuller early childhood teaching.

This year the Government restricted the TIA to study at NCEA Level 3 or under. Those now studying for a degree will continue to get the allowance until 2011.

The women were unsure whether they could continue with their planned study without the TIA.

Ms Bennett said she was keen to meet the women and releasing the information was not an attempt to silence them.

She said there was no "blanket rule" to regularly release private information when someone criticised the Government.

Ms Fuller told the Herald she was "astonished" her details had been released and did not believe she had left out any relevant information.

Ms Johnston was "flabbergasted" but said it would not put her off speaking out.

Prime Minister John Key told reporters he was "comfortable" with the women's information being released.

"The advice I have received is it's within Ministry of Social Development guidelines.

"I think the minister was trying to put a bit of balance around the story, wasn't being over judgemental but was simply saying here are all the facts and New Zealanders can assess whether the government's on the right track or not."

He said the information was not released because the Government was criticised.

It was "an option" to talk with people before their details were released in the future, Mr Key said.

Green Party spokeswoman Sue Bradford said releasing the women's details was an "outrage".

She called on Ms Bennett to apologise immediately and said the Government was showing it would use its power to discredit and humiliate anyone who criticised it.

... of people in glasshouses probably applies

Looks like Goffs Goofy media agitators have been exposed.

Well done Paula

nazi in the making.

Why should my taxes support liars who get massive social welfare handouts it is time to means test all of them What a scam we pay millions daily no questions asked..Shame TO LABOUR AND GREEN PARTY LOSERS.one of the people who gets the benefit $46000 BEFORE TAX for doing nothing BOTH LOSER PARTIES SUPPORT THAT.

The poor wee benefiacres need some financial counselling on how to get some more taxpayer funded interest free loans ,for their education purposes ,when they graduate they can pay it back ,like the rest of us.I am sure the average wage in NZ is much lower than what a person on the social welfare gets?Hope i am wrong as maybe i can copy that poor wee person, and even get millionaire Labour Party politicians going into bat for me,its a pity he cant do the same for the workers.

The Welfare system is being abused like it was probably never imagined would be possible, or that people would be so dishonest and devious; when teh scheme was introduced as 'helping hand' for the unfortunate. It was never intended to be the 'lifestyle support system' whihc it has become, with the vociferous support of certain equally dishonest politicians from the LEFT; most of whom themselves have never had any experience of 'real life productive employment.
The whole scheme is unafordable, and not sustainable; and urgently needs areview by a committe of non politicians, non beuracrats, no lawyers, no Trade Union secretaries of representatives.
Then, and only then are we likely to get an honest factually accurate report, and recommendations. What we don't need is another survey of the Auckland Super City style where Shand stated 'that it was obvious what to do', and them they produced a reccomendation to justify their preconceived objective.

When you're onto a good thing, the last thing you do is stick your head up and become visible.

Well finally a politician with some guts, roll on Paula.

The ignorant in the labour /green parties are only showing themselves up for what they really are, and that sure isn't economic wizkids. We learnt that over the last nine years didn't we.

We all have to be accountable, so why not beneficieries - oh, I forgot; we aren't allowed to benefit bash these poor misunderstood women, no in the eyes of Bradford and co we just have to work harder (to support her voters) so that when election time comes around they have a hardcore of voters. Well Sue and Charles I'm sick of your little game, the pair of you should go out and try working for a change instead of being over paid bludgers yourselves.

After all the sex education that's been bandied around in the schools you'd have thought they would have known what happens when you have unprotected sex, why should we the tax payers be even considering them for handouts, where's the guy in all of this, I'm quite sure these kids weren't 'airborn' .

Get rid of the DPB.

Good on you Paula, I absolutely agree with you exposing people who think it is there dam god right, to receive as much as they can out of the Tax Payer. Where our money goes is our BUSINESS. We are very lucky to receive anything. If there were no Tax payers, then where would these people be getting there handouts.

Keep up the good work Paula. If the women want to criticise the source of their income then the quantum & period of their income is crucial info otherwise they are misleading us taxpayers!!

To be expected from a National Govt, they are a bunch of racist bene bashing thugs always have been!.

Hope that bennett is forced to leave, as im certain this is a blatant breach of the privacy act!

To all those moaning taxpayers!!!, your time will come!
