Brownlee apologises for 'carping and moaning' Chch resident comments

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says he’s sorry he offended frustrated residents in damaged Christchurch homes with his comments reported in The Press.

“I empathise and sympathise with those people, but I’m also extremely angry at the way some people are characterising the Government as not caring or doing nothing for residents on Technical Category 3 (TC3) land, when we and many others are doing a great deal," the minister says.

In a Press article published this morning, Mr Brownlee was quoted as saying respondents to a survey by the Christchurch paper were "carping and moaning" about their situation. He also said complainers were likely those who had time to "buggerise around on Facebook all day."

This evening, Mr Brownlee apologised, and praised the people of the quake-hit city.

“Hundreds of people in insurance companies, the Earthquake Commission, engineering firms and building firms are doing all they can to provide certainty to the estimated 10,000 residents on TC3 land in Christchurch who will need foundation rebuilds or repairs," he said.

“Land is being assessed, homes are being fixed, and every day clear insurance pathways are being identified.

“I know this is not fast enough from many frustrated residents, but if we make poor decisions in haste because of this pressure then it will still be our fault in the long run.

“No one will thank us for making bad decisions.

“I must rely on the advice of people who are expert in their professions, and I’m doing that.

“I’m sorry people are having to wait, and having to live in uncomfortable conditions – we’re getting on with the job and doing our best to provide enduring certainty for everyone.”

This man has executive powers that are equivalent to a wartime prime minister, He has failed to use them constructively - excuse the pun - and no wabuses the very people he should be assisting. Most people in CHCH do not have the luxuries he has - a job and very big pension and travel perks which will last him the rest of his life and accommodation allowances. What a smug beneficiary of other people's grief, uncertain futures he is. Shame on you Brownlee.

Dont worry to about the big pension.

The negative health effects of being over weight should take care of this.

Give the guy a break. Personal attacks don't help anybody. It's tough going for everyone.

The view from the top is never the same as the view from the bottom.

No doubt there is stress at both ends. If anything the Government can be accused of trying to do too much, and taking too much responsibility which should have been devolved to the private sector. ACC is complicating things instead of simplifying them - case in point.

My view from the start is the Government needed to make sure people got paid so they can get on with fixing things. The Government also needed to repair the infrastructure and adjust the rules. Then they should just get out of the way.

Anyone see his pathetic interview on the BBC asian business report last week? Rico Hizon was very perplexed the images were of the chaos 2 years on and Brownlees diatribe "crisis what crisis" we are doing a fantastic job would have been humerous if it wasn't so tragic.
Brownlee if well out of his depth not only here but on fracking and the Ross marine reserve - where do we get these school boy politicians? And how do we keep them from making fools of themselves on international news channels?

Are you volunteering? Gerry Brownlee is a bit blunt and by his own admission, but I think we should be grateful for what is being achieved. Noted, the govt has a different approach to fixing Chch, than other overseas disasters, such as Japan. But Japan has a lot more people available and despite its financial situation can whistle up a damn sight more resources that NZ can. Also Japan's fast response was to build a vast number of small 2 bed sleepouts to get people housed. Here, those short term facilities were immediately derided as "inadequate", so the govt quite rightly canned any further expense as those built were never occupied. Duh! Make up your bl**dy minds!! What DO you want? Fast temporary OR slower permanent?

Why should he apologise, he is correct..
