Influential travel guide publisher Lonely Planet has named Christchurch one of its top 10 cities to visit in 2013.

The BBC-owned publisher says “New Zealand’s second largest city is rising from the rubble ... with a breathtaking mix of spirit, determination and flair. We believe 2013 will be a great year to visit to Christchurch and experience the amazing energy of the city in its rebuilding phase."

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker says, “It’s a real coup to get Christchurch included in the list of top 10 cities for 2013. As a regular user of Lonely Planet when I am travelling myself I fully understand the significant value of this recommendation.”

The mayor has recently starred in a quirky $1.2 million campaign aimed at winning back Australian tourists.

Has Lonely Planet rebuilt its credibility since they got caught writing about places no one had visited?
Trip Advisor is my preferred choice now.

Good on ya - knock it down. God forbid we accept some praise without the knockers having a go.

Where will all these tourists stay - in motels??

What will they see apart from destruction

The decent restaurants down there are constantly fully booked - even the locals get pissed off having to book a week ahead - so how are these tourists going to get a good experience.

Just out of interest when did the BBC buy Lonely Planet ? ( I'm not doubting the piece , just interested in when the change of ownership occured )

I'm certain that the Cardboard Cathedral played a big part in getting the city on the top 10 list. Funny to think that everyone bagged out a building that has got the city on this list which will certainly help tourism which in turn will lead to a faster recovery.
