Free department store mammograms trial
Capitalising on women’s homing device for department stores such as Myers, the NSW Breast Cancer Institute (BCI) is installing free mammogram testing in the lingerie departments of four Sydney department stores.
It is part of a new retail-based plan to help women obtain routine breast cancer examinations.
The clinics will utilise the latest digital screening equipment to reduce examination time and improve accuracy, reporting time and image quality.
The mammogram images will be transmitted to the BCI Breast Centre and read by two doctors.
“We live in a juggling society where women are juggling children and grandchildren, juggling their work and often leave themselves to last. Here’s a chance to have a mammogram when you’re shopping”, BCI executive director John Boyages said to The Australian.
Women say the retail-based option is both more convenient and less intimidating.
“I think it is nice that the clinic is in the lingerie department as it’s very comfortable and girlie”, Elizabeth Moulang 60, told The Australian.
Mr Boyages estimates that 1 in 200 women tested in a department store will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
Myer chief executive Bernie Brookes says the clinic provides a one-stop shop for female customers, who can do their shopping, grab a cup of coffee and have a mammogram.
"There is a degree of warmth about the clinic and it ... is extremely convenient for women.
"It's a great example of where everybody wins because it increases the penetration for people getting scanned and over three-quarters of Myer's staff are women", Mr Brookes said.
Retail clinics are a growing trend in the United States, with the number of clinics available estimated to grow from 450 to 6,000 in five years, according to WebMD.

i love this altruistic idea, it is important for woman to make the test, i for what i heard the test is a little expensive. imagine that woman go for shopping and to have the chance to make the test. all win, the clinics for the retail-based plan and woman that obtain routine breast cancer examinations. they can also win if the make shopping with ez saver card.
I think this is a great ideea! the incidence of breast cancer in the world is rising and something should be done about it! May this be a first step towards a better education of women around the world. But we shouldn't stop here. the importance of skin products that should be used to protect the organism from radiations should be clearely presented, so that no confusion be made. These products are the only real protection women have against this type of cancer!
I heard people say that this trial is fake as it is all a publicity stunt. Well,, OK, even if it was a publicity stunt, and probably it was, I still think women should take the opportunity and do the investigation. After that, you can just rate it on your own scale and decide if you'll do it again. But giving up so easily the opportunity do have an investigation as important as mammography done seems to be foolish. I think this kind of programs should made public before and explain their importance, otherwise they will never have the success they should!
I have a story with a strangely happy end: I went to the department store to get some stuff for the bathtub remodeling we wanted to do. I saw this trial offer and I went on and had a mammogram. The result terrified me! The result said I could have breast cancer and it would be a good idea to check this out. I went to the doctor and the result was positive. I had breast cancer in a incipient stage. I had surgery done and now everything it's OK. But, I will always be grateful to that dept store for having this project done!
The mammogram images will be transmitted to the BCI Breast Centre and read by two doctors I guess as an extra measure.
