Gen-i signs what it calls NZ's largest mobile deal

Telecom's Gen-i services division has signed what it's calling the country's largest mobile deal, covering, covering 5500 voice and data connections at Fletcher Building.

A Gen-i insider said the company believed the next largest account was Fonterra, whose mobile contract covers 3500 staff (and not such a good news story for Telecom after the dairy giant put a hold on its XT upgrade after the new network's teething troubles; Gen-i told NBR today that Fonterrra's transition from Vodafone 3G to XT was reanimated last year and is now "nearly complete").

NBR understands the breakdown of mobile connections at Fletcher Building is currently around 2000 Vodafone; 1500 on Telecom's older CDMA network and 2000 on XT.

All staff will be moved to XT over the next six months.

Gen-i already has a broader telecommunications contract with Fletcher Building, plus a five-year, $20 million mobile, voice and data deal with Australia's Crane Group (Fletcher’s latest acquisition) back in 2009). The company would not put a value on the new mobile deal.

Fletcher Building CIO Paul Knight said keeping costs down, especially in the wake of the Christchurch quake, was a key element of the competitive tender.

Theres a laugh. Fletchers, Christchurch and the words competitive tender all in the same sentence.

My experiences with Gen-i have been fantastic! Vodaphone....not so great! Well done.

Gen-i / Telecom sucks! Vodafone truly global service.

Gen-i is the best

Well, obviously not, as Vodafone just lost 2000 connections to them?

Mobile must be a 'loss lead' in this deal because how else would anyone want to go for such an unreliable network? Reliable communication is obviously secondary to cost with FB.

I wouldn't really call Vodafone's network reliable...

Exactly. I can't even hold calls in the Auckland cbd. Vodfails network is bile. Any customer like i am would find it laughable for them to say we are more reliable.

Being ex-Vodafone and given how Fletcher Building operate, there would be only one winner here, and it was not Gen-i. "Costs down" means a loss-lead win here for Gen-i. There deals never really make any money, especially when you have to cut your existing revenues too!

LOL its always funny to see the vodafans blame client wins on price...its an easy out for them in the face of the truth about their overall client proposition being weak in the enterprise space.

As with any astute corporate having a market competative price gets you to the table, it very rarely gets you the deal.

Obviously Gen-i is unaware of the 15,000+ unit deal done to Te Wanaga o Aotearoa in 2002

Units of what though? hahahahahaha!

prepay sim cards. I suspect
