Google+: no fake names, no profiles for dogs, no private profiles
UPDATED: Google has said if it is sent government ID's, they will be destroyed.
"We use this information only to confirm your name and to restore your Google Profile. If you provide a copy of your government ID, we will destroy it after we validate your name."

Ever wanted to call yourself ‘Awesometastic Jumblepants’?
Neither have I.
But unless it’s your legal or commonly used name, you can’t use it to create a Google+ profile. And from July 31st, say goodbye to private profiles.
Google+ users have complained that their accounts, utilising pseudonyms or unusual names (or not so unusual) or characters, have been suspended for violating Google’s Community Standards.
On the Google+ project support site, Google states that its Profiles work best in the ‘Identified’ state and so requires users to employ their real or commonly used name.
“This way you can be certain you’re connecting with the right person, and others will have confidence knowing that there is someone real behind the profile they’re checking out.”
Google requires a full first and last name, avoiding unusual symbols such as numbers, symbols or “obscure punctuation.” Users who need obscure punctuation to differentiate their real name from, say, ‘Your mother resembles a bewildered hippo’ in their native language may have to go through the review process for suspended profiles.
Google also says that profiles must represent a single person, so no couples or profiles for your pet rock.
Google community manager Natalie Villalobos responded to user rumblings on July 11, advising suspended users to request a review.
If Google staff still don’t like the name “Mongo Bongo Suspenderville” after 24 hours, users can request a second appeal and provide additional information to support their name claim.
The profile is then reviewed via one-to-one communication with Google.
Additional information that users have sent to Google to prove their various names includes scans of driver’s licenses, links to business websites and Facebook accounts.
And from July 31st, say bye-bye to private profiles. Google+ announced it would be deleting all private profiles after that date. Users must make their profile public, delete it themselves or do nothing, and have it deleted for them.
“We believe that using Google Profiles to help people find and connect with you online is how the product is best used. Private profiles don’t allow this, so we have decided to require all profiles to be public.”
Google does point out that the only required information that will be displayed on a profile page is the user’s first name. If users have legally changed that to, or are commonly known as, “Mannequin Concerto”, and can prove it, they can continue their pseudo-anonymity in peace. That, or just create an account under the name Jane Smith.

What me paranoid?
Typical ...a rule for one and not for others.
Villalobos...definately sounds more fun than Smith or Jones
Yeah, we know that Google will never take advantage of knowing our real names...
The real issues most people have today about privacy is the amount of information these sites are collecting about its users, the way this information is being collected, and how this information is being used. With all this information social networking sites today have about it’s users, add a real name, add an email, and add facial recognition, not only do people loose their privacy, they also expose themselves to cyber crimes, and predatory advertising & manipulation, etc.,
Regardless of what sites today promise regarding security, any site can be hacked. An example would the government & banks who have so called state of the art security systems. Social networking sites such as Google+ & Facebook are open door gold mines for cyber criminals. The obvious solution to address these security problems is simple, no real names, no emails. You don’t need a real name and an email address to social network effectively yet with some anonymity, you need this information to sell to advertisers & companies, you also need this information to sell someday to private interest, governments, companies, etc.,
Although only 20% complete and still in Beta, ONLYMEWORLD early on seems to realize that respecting its users Privacy Rights is paramount to both longevity & success in the industry. Their platform is similiar to Facebook, Google+, Twitter, and Linkedin, yet differ because of their approach to privacy by not asking for real names, and email addresses.
The only "right" to privacy people have is from the government.
True, so I will continue to excercise my right not to join google+ due to their lack of respect for my desire to keep myself private.
Wow, google is being ballsy. The is absolutely no way I would give up my personal info so easily. This reeks of 1984. Send in a copy of my drivers license?!?! You gotta be kidding me. No private profiles? F-you google. No way.
Sadly, millions of mindless idiots thinking "look at me! look at me!" will be more than happy to turn over all of their personal information. I tried to log into youtube the other day and google was demanding my phone number, all for the fear of me losing my password.
No, google, enough is enough. I won't allow you to look up my rear with a flashlight. Stop it.

Well, that settles it. I abandoned facebook a long time ago for similar reasons. Looks like google is next. Shame really.
Amazing, you did not ask for my email address or my private! name. Your intentions are noble. I respect you.

Best comment so far :)
One word...Stupid.
You don't mind a peeping tom staring in your windows at night??? Or some secretive company monitoring all your phone calls??? Or companies tracking your every move whilst web surfing?? Or hackers breaking into your computer and viewing your tax returns, SSN number, etc??? There are two possibilities here- 1. You were joking. 2. You are an idiot.
so....who the F*ck is google anyway?
You must be an idiot if you think you "need" google.......
And if you want anonymous Search Engines: Use Scroogle or Duckduckgo. These should be added to your Bookmarks - Of course you use Firefox Browser, it's the most secure, and don't forget the LSO cookies, for which Firefox has a removal Addon.
Once any information is shared, then you have effectively lost all control over that information, as no Database is entirely secure.
And of course you know who started Facebook: ex CIA and Homeland Security whizkids - Keep off these entirely, if you value your personal information.
Scroogle Scraper is
duckduckgo is here:
Cheers :-))
the links were auto-removed, so a second try:

I was keen to join Google+ but after reading that I can't keep my imformation contained, No Thanks.
Facebook is bad enough and I try to keep that locked down as much as I am able.
Not sure why people are crying and whining. You can still use fake names like John Smith or Joe Doe. Google is only banning outrageous names like Crusty the Clown. Just use a fake name, a secondary email address, and never list phone number or address and you are safe from the New World Order.
As above - I imagine some will be put off by the lack of private profiles but at the end of the day it isn't hard to simply create a play on your name so it isn't an exact match.
If you don't want it, don't use it, in the meantime I will enjoy the genius that is google circles
Google is probably the safest network possible at this moment on the internet. Their safety measures are to be admired! I even think I remember a course on internet privacy laws held my the honorable Anne Segal Tucson, AZ when I was in law school, in which she even mentioned Google as an example when it came to safety. I was never a fan of social networks, but if I were to sign up in one it would be Google+.
