Greens call for disability issues commission

A disability issues commission should be set up to advocate for the disabled and ensure the Government met its legal commitments, the Green Party says.

Green MP Metiria Turei said the establishment of a disabilities commission was a key plank in the party's disability policy, which she released today.

She said such a commission could provide independent advocacy and oversee the implementation of the disabilities strategy and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities.

MPs today debated the first reading of a bill that, if passed, will ratify the convention.

She said the commission would also be able to advocate on and advise for more fair funding of disability services.

Under the Greens' policy any public transport that received public funding would have to provide adequate access for the disabled.
