Harawira welcomed back by Maori Party

Maori Party renegade Hone Harawira has returned to the fold after the party caucus decided to give him another chance.

Mr Harawira would confine himself to his Te Tai Tokerau electorate in the Far North until the end of the year, then rejoin the caucus in 2010.

He made a fullsome apology this morning, and the party said he accepted he had made mistakes which had caused damage.

Mr Harawira got into trouble with his party because of an unauthorised trip to Paris while on a parliamentary visit to Paris and his racially abusive email in defence of it where he referred to white people as motherf...ers.

Party leaders asked him to consider leaving and becoming an independent, but he said he was determined to stay in the ranks.

After a series of hui in his electorate, the problem was handed back to the party's caucus, which met late into the night in Wellington yesterday.

A sombre Mr Harawira apologised to the party for pain and suffering he caused and how they had derailed credibility the party had fought to achieve.

"I also recognise the responsibility that I carry as a leader within Maoridom and I apologise most sincerely to all young Maori, and especially to our mokopuna, for the bad example that I have set by my comments."

He also apologised more generally for offence caused.

"I apologise also to those New Zealanders, both Maori and Pakeha, and particularly women, who have been offended by my comments. They were insensitive, they were hurtful, they were unnecessary, and I apologise for the grief and anguish that they have caused."

Party whip Te Ururoa Flavell hoped the apology would be helpful.

"We have found the strength to exercise compassion while reminding ourselves of the need for individual and collective discipline -- mana motuhake -- and of the high expectations of our membership."

Mr Flavell said the errant MP had requested the extra time in his electorate and the party agreed to that.

"2010 is a new year. We intend to build on lessons learnt and consolidate the gains that have been made in the short time of our relationship agreement with the National Party; while at the same time strenghtening our relationship with each other."

The Maori Party has five MPs -- co-leaders Pita Sharples and Tariana Turia, Mr Flavell, Rahui Katene and Mr Harawira.

The caucus meeting was not attended by Mrs Turia, who is recovering from gastric bypass surgery. Dr Sharples had other business in Auckland but will comment to news media shortly.

Whats New?

Birds of a feather stick together.

after his Paris fraud, his

after his Paris fraud, his racism, won't it be sickly ironic if he gets some paid flights to copenhagen on the tax payer he hates - emitting Co2 as he flies for an international fraud that sets to punish the tax payer he hates.

too much!

What a joke..... the man is

What a joke..... the man is a racist. Why is he allowed double standards? Imagine the outrage if we called him a black m...f...r and few other truths..... would we be entitled to keep our position?

wow!

didn't see that one coming (yeah right)

Hone: "very sorry NZ"
NZ: "that's okay, Hone, you racist mof****r."

This just shows that the

This just shows that the racist maori party really do agree with his sentiments, they just aren't stupid enough to say it out loud. But the truth is that they don't need to say it, we all already know - a political party who's sole objective is to promote the interests of one racial group at the expense of all others is nothing but racist aparthied.

HONE

Lawyers in the trough, Pollies in the trough, No Mana in the Moari Party -
I think I'll ride my 850 without rego- I can't see any reason to take any of it seriously - no one else does!!
Good luck NZ inc

The best outcome

Despite the pain he has caused I believe this is the best outcome for NZers. Hopefully the process has made him think about how stupid and immature his comments were and he will be a better citizen and politicion for it. Better inside the fort making a positive contribution than outside trying to blow it up?

Hone s---t for brains Harawira

The race relations office has been very quiet on this entire issue, so should one take it that their function is to protect brown fron white but not white from brown ??

Wake up new Zealand ... the writing is clearly on the wall now

yesterdays hero

move on you-all..don't give it any oxygen...he's toast anyway..part of the past.
in a couple of years bleeding liberals will use the threat of poor old hone the boogey man as a way of making their children go to bed and shut up!!

The man is a joke and the

The man is a joke and the party is even worse. National will milk them for all they're worth and then kick them to the curb when they reach their used by date.

An Indictment1

After viewing the six o'clock news on the Harawira outbursts on the colour of the skins of most NZs namely white ,Harawira and his party failed to acknowledge that his comments were blatantly Racist.,the whole party stands INDICTED.

HONE - NEVER WAS GONNA' BE GONE EH?

The chances of Hone Harawira being evicted from the Maori Party always were south of zero. Harawira is the Trojan Horse for the party's core agenda - sent out to agitate, infiltrate, fire outrageous shots & then scuttle back to the marae to watch the fallout.

At times like this the inherent Maori cunning is deployed to full effect. Duck and dive, ebb and flow but - whatever you do - don't say what you actually mean.

Sadly, one is driven to the conclusion that we are dealing with primitive people.

no guts

hell we knew those brown m...er f.....rs had no balls and couldn't be relied on to do the right thing , so why are we surprised ?????

Go the Bro, Hone Harawira

Real pleased Hone is back where he belongs in parliament. Least now he can continue to contribute to do what he does best, create real debate in the house & do what he was elected to do, which is progress the interests of we-the-people, both Maori and Pakeha.

The funny thing about this whole saga is that Don Brash's Orewa Speech was way more blatantly racist, and what happened? Over half the country flocked to his banner to vent their spleen, indicating their own similar redneck & underlying racist prejudices as well.
Further, reading some of the comments within this columns topic shows up a number of the descendants of those same white motherf****ers Hone was actually talking about too!
Sounds like quite a few closet bedsheet wearers with holes for eyes like calling the kettle black, but woe betide any Maori who calls the kettle white, then they must be racist?
I accept the language wasn't the best, but take out all the expletives he used and you actually have a factual statement about colonizations impact on Maori. But hey dont take my word for it, maybe you should research what pakeha NZ historian, Steven King said, and inform yourself! Maybe the truth will set you free!

Finally, I have got news for you brothers of other mothers, Hone's gonna be around alooooooooong time, and hes gonna get under your skin more n more, so u better get use to it. Thats cause he has a mandate from we the people, from the Maori role, who put him there!
I for one am real proud of Hone Harawira, because the mettle of a man is he who can front his critics and apologise when he knows he made an error of judgment. That done case closed. Time to move on, what do ya reckon, we all just move on??

Re No guts

Who u calling brown m..er..f..ers, honky?
Say that to his face, see whos got the kahunas then?
Easy to to malign someone from behind your computer screen.
What a loser!

But you are brown

But you are brown m..er..f..ers, rastus. Hone & the human rights commision said it's ok for us to refer to each other in this fashion. They set the precedent so if you have any objections I suggest you take it up with them.

The racist party shows it's

The racist party shows it's true colours again.

yea fair point

Then u have a real nice day you white mutherF***er!
haha lol

Radical means in Latin- getting to the root of the problem

To think that Buddy Mikaere leaked Hone's email to the media was a low blow from another Maori brother- only reason I suggest he did this was because he has a past grievance with Hone or flat out jealous. I mean to say if I was talking to another brother who pissed me off I dare say I would use all kind of language- this is simply being human from my perspective and Hone is an emotional guys who just so happens to be political and Maori.

Racist is a term NZer's love to throw around without really understanding its true nature or indeed what it really looks like. Take a look at countries where people simply hate and kill people because of their religious beliefs or indeed their race. We need to consider that Maori Party has a sovereign right to lead and indeed Maori as tangata whenua have every right to be involved in politics- it is our sovereign right- so all NZer's get with programme.

One think I would say about Hone is that he puts everything out on the table- how many politicians can we say do that? Is he right or wrong is not the right question? The question we all should be asking is why would he say or do what he did? Totally different perspective.

In Maori we never apologise or say sorry for the simple reason that once we say or do something its done and we can't take it back- sorry doesn't cut it in Maoridom...so I can understand why Hone was not prepared to say sorry. Based on tikanga and the world of Maori...time and actions are the only healers not words. Sorry is a Pakeha concept which means from a Maori perspective, you will do it again...just look at the millions examples over time that attest to this being so...
