Harawira's email missive cops flak from supporter
Maori Party MP Hone Harawira's white-bashing expletive-ridden email has lost his party the support of the voter he sent it to.
Former Waitangi Tribunal director Buddy Mikaere will no longer be voting for the party after receiving the email in which Mr Harawira accused "white motherf...ers" of "puritanical bullshit" for expecting him to follow the rules.
Mr Harawira skipped an important meeting in Brussels so he and his wife Hilda could spend a day in Paris. He paid for the extra travel himself.
Mr Mikaere, who runs a consulting company, emailed Mr Harawira complaining about his actions.
"... you're no better than that w...er Rodney Hide and the white mofos you complain about," Mr Mikaere wrote, referring to Mr Hide's actions in taking his partner on an overseas ministerial trip despite the Prime Minister John Key's direction against the practice.
"And get off your moral high horse while you're at it -- nobody forced you to be an MP."
Mr Harawira wrote back starting his email; "Gee Buddy, do you believe that white man bullshit too do you?
"White motherf...ers have been raping our lands and ripping us off for centuries and all of a sudden you want me to play along with their puritanical bullshit."
Mr Harawira then went on to say how much time and energy he put into fighting for Maori and what a big role his wife Hilda played in that.
"And quite frankly I don't give a shit what you or anyone else thinks about it. OK?"
Mr Mikaere told NZPA that he thought his email was light-hearted but was not surprised by Mr Harawira's reaction, saying he had an aggressive personality. However, the language and racial comments did shock him.
"I don't think it befits any politician to talk like that to anybody whatever the provocation. There is no excuse for talking like that," he said.
He was also insulted as a taxpayer who worked just as hard as Mr Harawira and whose taxes paid for the trip.
Asked if he would continue to support the party the answer was: "Goodbye.
"Why would you want to be supporting a party that thinks that little of all New Zealanders, not just their supporters, and uses that kind of language back to people who have supported them?"
A dressing down by Maori Party co-leaders Tariana Turia and Pita Sharples would not be enough.
"The thing that would calm me down was if he were to resign, go do something else."
The racial remarks were made at a time when relations were improving, he said.
"It seems to me this Government more than any other has made an attempt to reconcile people and I think taking the Maori Party on-board was a very encouraging development and this just kind of runs counter to all those good efforts that are being made."
Mr Mikaere said he voted for the party and helped in the past getting people along to fund-raisers.
"I wouldn't say I'm a high profile supporter, more of a passive supporter but active around election time."
Neither Mrs Turia nor Mr Harawira has responded to requests for comment.

Hone the racist
why do we put up with this racist good for nothing tax payer wasting jerk. this guys needs to be removed from parliament. we do not need to put up with crap from this guy any longer and that goes for the racist party he represents as well. lets all complain to the race relations office.
We wont have to put up with it for too long
Pita Sharples and Tariana Turia are too smart to permit this. In order to stand any chance of gaining reelection they will insist these comments are immediately retracted. Failure to do so I think will result in him being booted from the Maori Party Caucus and see him hold the seat as an independent... at least until the next election that is. It will be the Maori Party's seat again then.
Joke
MP's need to be beyond re-proach. Harawira was in Brussels on behalf on the New Zealand taxpayer to work on ALL our behalf - not for a jolly to Paris. Hyde should not have been attending a wedding and theme parks . It's OK to do it on their own time but not ours. Time to step up to the plate and be responsible.

Retraction of statements is quite redundant. Once said, it can't be unsaid. Hone's diplomatic core is in its infancy and has yet to mature. Clearly.

I know its pointless to retract after things are said. What I was endeavouring to say is that the Maori Party will want to sweep this away or, more likely, distance themselves from this type of character as quickly as possible.
Harawira is only 1 Maori
We now know what is in Harawira’s heart (no not Brussels), so how can we allow him, to continue as a Maori Party MP. Pita Sharples and Tariana Turia are smart and will do what is needed. We are already getting comments from people that believe that the Maori party is all racist. If what’s in the heart is also in the head then there will be growth, If not confusion will prevail. I agree lets complain to the race relations office. They should step-in without our prompting. Perfect comment, well done! I am getting the impression that Maori radicals are trying to cash in from all New Zealanders every possible way. I'd say: study hard, be open minded and you will not need any handouts. But hey! why bother when NZ government is always sorry and willing to pay as much as they ask for. This is crazy, New Zealand! And who can vote for the Maori party after this? "He's very popular" they say. A popular racist politician - world history have seen this before... I wish tourists boycotted New Zealand from now on - It would be interesting to see this low productivity agricultural country joining the developing world without foreign cash. Anything on BBC/ CNN yet?

Racism
Everyone knows that Maori can get away with everything they say and do, and not be held to the same standards as the rest of New Zealand, because of what happened 200 years ago. He will get away with it because he is in the same party as the biggest group of racists I have seen in my long, well travelled life, who will make the excuses for him.

Racism can trigger strong emotions from both sides. I think it's best we just respect each other now. Forget our past (even though this is difficult), but forgive and forget. and move on.
