Fyfe speaks out on Branson job offer rumours

Rob Fyfe says Sir Richard Branson has not offered him a job.

Speculation he was resigning to take up a job within the Virgin Group empire, he assumed, had emanated from Sir Richard's visit to New Zealand late last year, during which the airline bosses faced off in a boat race on Auckland's harbour to promote the Virgin Business challenge.

But Mr Fyfe, who announced his resignation from the airline this morning, said he had no job offers on the table.

"I'm not talking to anyone and don't have anything in mind," he said of his plans post-Air New Zealand.

Mr Fyfe said he wasn't even sure if his next steps would see him stay in the airline industry.

His career, which started in the airforce, had seen him work in television and banking.

"I've never been wedded to an industry I'm far more interested in finding things where I can make a difference."

For now, he was still focused on leading Air New Zealand, where he will remain in the top job until Christmas.

He acknowledged 11-months was a long notice period to work out.

That was to to ensure the board has time to find a successor, and creating opportunity for people within the business to come through, he said.

make no bones about it, Rob would jump at the chance to be with virgin.

I would jump into bed with Branson too,Rob has got a lot of life left, you never know where it leads him.

mmm did he feather his own nest buying virgin aussie from the uk owners???

AirNZ is a sick puppy dependent on core monopoly routes and the largess of government/soe custom

Interesting Jetstar announced a new Chch staff base and expanding into Q'town.

JK won't be getting much for our shares at this rate.

Sounds like some misdirection and an attempt to be a Virgin wannabe have backfired. Although perhaps sending out another press release diverts people from reading the comments in your earlier article. If he really was going to Virgin isn't that a conflict of interest? The NZ taxpayer funds paying a huge price for their shares only to have it benefit others. In the meantime the Herald says 200 Air NZ staff have been laid off while Virgin is mass recruiting. Investigative journalists who ask hard news questions required please.

Telecom CEO place will be vacant soon.

Rob has does a great job at ANZ in a very tough environment.
Full marks Rob and good luck.

Surely he would have a restraint of trade from working in the airline industry. They wouldn't allow a CEO to jump ship to a potential competitor.

of course he will be winging his way to Virgin....and Kia Ora to him.

Fyfe is great at building his own self image. Is ego knows no bounds. He has screwed provincial NZ with fares that are unseemly. He has thereby reduced air traffic by over pricing.Thank goodness for Jetstar who have the depth to seriously challenge Air NZ,eg,Wgtn to Queenstown one way up to $400 with Air NZ and $69 Jetstar(and with the baggage add ons and ability to change fares,$109).

Don't so be so negative.

For your extra $291 you've got those lovely Trelise Schutzstaffel uniforms and you get a "free" biscuit.

Jetstar and Emirates don't stand a chance.
