Helen Clark's UN post confirmed unanimously
Former prime minister Helen Clark has taken her political skills to the world stage, confirmed unanimously this morning by the UN general assembly as the new head of the United Nations' Development Programme.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon nominated Miss Clark to the job last week, and with his recommendation her nomination was unanimously approved by the UN General Assembly this morning.
Miss Clark, Labour prime minister from 1999-2008, joins the UN program on April 20.
Her new position is the third most powerful in the UN, behind only the secretary general and his deputy. She replaces Kemal Dervis, a former Turkish cabinet minister.
The UNDP is the United Nations' global development network, providing training, advice and support for developing countries. The UNDP oversees a global development network with an estimated $US13 billion ($NZ23.12 billion) in resources. It operates in 166 nations.
She gained unanimous approval from the 192-nation General Assembly.
Mr Ban's spokeswoman said she "will bring a strategic perspective coupled with fresh thinking and impetus for change."
Miss Clark said it was up to the Government to name a date for a by-election in her Mount Albert seat, a race that has quickly become controversial, but she believed it would be in June.

Brilliant! Helen Clarke has always been a world-class leader.
Helen Clarke with an "e" may have been a world class leader!
Excuse me have i missed something? In the 9 long years of Clarks social engineering and cruzifying a nation in every way, can someone explain other than her own agenda what was done for NZ.
Miss Clark? I thought that title was used only for an unmarried woman. This overseas appointment maybe a good excuse for her to get out of her sham of a marriage. Then I will call her Miss Clark instead of Mrs Davis.
Helen Clark is fricking awesome and deserved this job!! She deserves a big round of applause and it will be a shame that New Zealand will lose her.
Good Luck i say!
"Cruzifying a nation in every way"? Perhaps, Samantha, you have not heard of Zimbabwe. Congrats Helen - maybe you can rescue some other countries from the grasp of greed and corruption.
Helen oversaw the Highest non wartime exit of New Zealanders in History. nearly 10% of our population left on her watch
People like me who refuse to raise my Precious kids in a Hell hole created with dream world ideology proven to be a failure well decades ago. and the prof was in her results of a nation getting worse and worse and more and more unsafe.
Helen was a consionceless theif of state ,money dispite written warnings from the auditor general she Stole the money 800% higher than any other mis spending party) to rigg the 06 election and legislated for the first time in NEw Zealand history that Political Theft is ok if you are the Ruling Party.
She would in a just land have been imprisoned for violating electoral laws.
At the same time making out some scape goat christian sect to be bad when they had to the letter checked all their activities were legal and moral with the electoral authorities which Hellen raised her middle finger to..
And to Helen Demonised these good motived Free speakers trying to warn the nation about EXACTLY what finally did happen..
The Nation was raped in a democratic sense with law after foolhardy law ensuring our country D-Generate were rammed through well against the democratic will of the people whom Helen and her MOB were ment to REPRESENT!
If this is the judgement the UN makes on its powerful staff They are the most foolhardy joke organisation of all.
Helen should be in Prison not in control of Money that she by her own admission to her betrayed loyal bank roller does not know how it works.
If her gender is justification for incompetence in high positions or if being a domineering bigot is, then she is qualified.
All those glorifying our Nations most shameful leader ever, never have any content to their rationale and are either Nutta lefties or inately blind feminists. We need Moral Fibre and competence in World Politics not corruption financial competence and ideological extremists like Hellen.
Either way she can get a USA visa but 'hubby' can't = I wonder why.....
Thanks for the comparison with both politicians ,i have yet to see or hear MUGABE lobbying for legal prostitution for 18 year old girls or abortions for our 13YEAR OLD CHILDREN without the parents being notified,if that is worthy of praise for Helen in NZ,it may not get the same praise in some other parts of the world
Samantha/kiwi girl you live in a country with electricity, running water, a social welfare system, a roof over your head etc etc. We are the lucky ones there are 100s of millions of people that wish they could have access to things you take for granted everyday and yet you still moan about trivial matters. Get over it and realise you live in a paradise (that may not be perfect) and maybe just maybe put some of that energy that you use to moan into more important matters cos the world needs it and by doing nothing that makes you even more bad and hypocritical than helen clark who you critise so well (at least shes trying to do something about the problems of the world).
Good day
Yes I live in such a place and you in New Zealand do not.
I left and our power does indeed stay on Trains do run regularly and on time in every town over the size of Levin.
We don't have to fear as women walking down the streets at night alone and we actually don' have to lock our doors. No Bull their!
My car sits in the middle of town far out of my sight unlocked now with plenty of stealable stuff in view of thieves. (a $20K + car).
Corrupt people regulary Apologise in tears publicly not passing blame. and they still penalise violators of what is the only unprotected contract in New Zealand that of Marriage. Though only with responsibility to financial support.
My tax rate is 10% and I am on NZ$6800 per year.
We have the highest life expectancy in the world and are the second largest economy.
We have far more wild land than NEw Zealand by % of land area (75%) with forests from one end of the country to the other. We recycle at a far higher level than New Zealand and have a similar carbon foot print dispite a far higher GDP.
They still discipline what is the only sector beyond consequence for their actions in NEw Zealand (Kids)
And Teachers don't face Violent kids in the Classroom.
They also still execute the odd Really bad Blatant/ Mass Murderer. Their Prisons teach responsibility as a key to self esteem not self esteem as a key to wanting to be responsible.
Chris I like 10 % of New Zealand on Helens watch decided you can have your paradise where electricity is often off tax pays criminals upkeep and for irresponsible peoples care mercelessly teaching such people to never improve. Where the blind sheep lead by a blinder leader believed that taking money off you to give it back to you was actually kind and that Cullen was a Good investor of your future in international markets that he has made you all massive losses on.
The light has shone again recently through Key who sadly has to deal with some severely Brainwashed people that some how Socialism works. So he has to applaud Helen and play nice to the beloved dragon games to keep the brainwashed loyal peasents of socialisim appeased as he tries to engineer a brighter logical real world successful future for even uneducated (in logic folk like Chris.)
Chris take of your thick Labour party Pink glasses and look at teh Mess Helen made in Prime sailing conditions.
Her Gender aside and your mutual Political afiliation aside she achieved only degeneration in New Zealand and that through Illegal activity as required... and I don:t mean nor give the slightest about paintings nor speeding that may even me justifiable as a PM.
I mean election fraud by mass funding discrepency.
$68000
Kiwi Girl you might live in a priveleged country which im guessing from your facts in your blog is Japan but the point im making is your basically moaning about pretty trivial stuff when you look at some of the greater problems that face the world.
Good for you that you live in a privilidged contry but I can assure you if you live in Japan or you live in NZ on a world comparison we have some of the best standards of living compared to other less fortunate places. NZ is a paradise its underpopulated, relativley clean and the standards of living are high.
I am the first to admit its not perfect(what place is) but its better than alot of other places and for that we should be greatfull and give praise to people that take a stand on big global issues and are willing to help combat these issues that face mankind instead of belittling them and being so negative.
I for one dont really care what you think Helan clark did or didnt do for NZ the point is she is willing to take a stand and get on with it. Good for her I think she deserves some sort of credit for that. At the end of the day your opinion of her aint gona change her atempt at creating a better world and I think and im sure most pepole would think that is better than you actually realising you need to wake up and smell the roses and start being abit more positive!!
By the way my thick labour party glasses arent pink there blue like my eyes bro.
Chris the main credit given to helen as having anything extraordinary is her ability to dominate and her female parts physically. Neither make her fit to control dominate nor make policy on how we live our live.
New Zealand has been dragged back decades under her mad ideology dispite its claims purposes that reap the opposite of their goals. Dispite that being an obvious result if you understand kindergarten level principles of life to a thinking person.
A Verified criminal like her does NOT deserve credit just because she is succesful in tearing apart democracy in NZ Defying her Citizens mandate. etc.
Your irrational rationale demands that a mass murderer should at least be honioured weather you agree with murdering or not for being good at it.
Get Real. Get some reason adn MAKE a single logical point please.
I do not live in a perfect place either but the difference is in NEw Zealand we have sat by and applauded a person Wrecking it and said we should not drag her away from the wheel because she is an expert at domination and assertive and a woman the first elected female PM
That is a Very Very Very ignorant pack of sheep being lead to the slaughter.
and People like you seem to be the foolhardy 'Judas sheep' dragging the naive along with you.
I am just pointing out the Blood pouring out of teh slaughter room door as reason not to follow your reasonless types.
Kiwi girl on a scale of 1 to 10 with mass murders etc being 10 I think Helen clark would be around a 1 like most of us. You call her a criminal but what has she been convicted off apart from her political party over spending in the election compaign. Wow big deal!! Get over it. Ive speed and broken the law and that makes me a criminal and im sure youve speed or not given way to somone or some other petty criminal activity so that makes me and you a criminal.(hypocrite get off you high moral horse) Big deal life goes on.
I dont see how NZ has gone back decades as you have said. Where is the evidence for this and isnt it a bit early to make a claim like that as its only been a couple of months since she was ousted.
I also dont get how you say that the only thing that makes her extrodinary is being dominant and female. Get real luv I dont see how having those traits makes you extrodinary. I do agree with you however that she is assertive and dominant. In a position such as she was in those traits are a worthwhile combination but that dosnt make her bad person after all alot of pepole have those traits. Last time I checked I dont recall anyone going to jail because they asserted themselves and were dominant.
Kiwi girl everyone has a sheep tendancey and follows the pack its human nature its how we survived when we were in the savanah millions of years ago(We still use these traits now to survive but thats amother post) Ill give you a relevant example of sheep behavoir that we all have to take responsiabilty for and that is this:
Most of us(NZ, Japan, USA, Australia etc) get all the necessary food, acsess to the internet, shelter, proper medical care, electricity, protection, democracy etc etc. Much more than we really need. But and heres the most important point of what im trying to say is we have people living in this world in contries like, Angola, Zimbabwe, India, Bangladesh the list goes on and on that dont have acsess to the basics of human life E.g 3 million pepole dying each year due to inproper sanatation. All of this is happening while a heck of a lot of us sit back and dont care a bit like sheep I suppose and thats a tradgedy a true tradgedy. So when you preach on about trivial problems about the paradise that we live in like NZ or Japan or any 1st world contry you need to get real and maybe do somthing about it instead of moaning cos theres pepole out there that try and make this place called earth a better place for all of us not just ourselves.
Its way easier to criticise than actually get up and do somthing about the real problems cos at the end of the day if everyone pulled together and really appreciated what they have it makes the very places like NZ better for ourselves and everyone else.
For all the time you moan about Helen Clarks term which is in the past thiers pepole dying and guess what youve got a part to play in that just like me.
Helen Clark aint perfect and she made mistakes as most pepole would agree after all we are only just human. But it seams as though Helens gona stand up for her principals (equality, justice, demogracy) and gona go and try and fix some of the problems of the world. (good for her)
The Question I suppose is what are you gona do about these problems??
Also I dont get it you dont live in NZ yet your having a whinge about it. Did you vote?? If you really think its as bad as what you say just dont come back thats alot easier than having alot of whingers in a place I call paradise.
So go live in Nepal or Congo for a while and get back to me about where you would rather live there or NZ??.You might find the answer has been with you all along
Well done Helen!! What an outstanding achievement! It is extremely sad to see that so many people are corrupted by whatever it may be not to realise the amazing leader you are and what you will go on to do for the world. I know that you are above all the pettiness but I just wanted to say, never doubt that what you are doing is right-trust your instinct!
You are going to change things in places where it is needed much more than here in little old aotearoa. Though we won't forget the vast and vital changes you have made here too. You give me hope!
Congratulations on the job! You deserve it!!
Congratulations to Helen Clark on her United Nations appointment. I believe she will go down in history as one of our most effective Prime Ministers and I believe she will be equally effective in her new post.
We're so proud of you. Well done and you deserve it!
Congratulations Helen...I know you will do an amazing job of your new post if your long run in NZ is anything to run by. I am so proud of you!
WELL-Now we know the names of some of Helen's relatives-or even closer people!!
We all know that if it is true peter d. cannot get a visa for America there is said to be a very good reason for that situation. What an arresting discussion this is. YES!! MT
kiwigirl, why do you call yourself that?? You dont live in our land any more.....Im all for Chris.....
keep your moaning and whinging to yourself and stop slandering Helen.
You know NOTHING!
NZ has been left with an horrendous increase of prostitution and street work becoming more rampand.
You don't worry that with the best of intentions you could be making prostitution into a problem for New Zealand because people may think of it as a possible career?
Helen Clark:
No, I don't think that as a result of what has happened they'll be a single more person attracted to work in this rather unpleasant profession and I don't think they'll be a single more client. I think what we do in New Zealand is endeavour to have the law deal with reality rather than some sort of illusion that it doesn't happen.
Helen was wrong and I cannot say she was a good leader but a naive one primarily influenced by ignorant NZ academics.
She is a lesbian but has covered it up. Bush said she was honest- I do not agree with him and feel disappointed that she was not upfront as like some other NZ parliament members have been. It is not the fact she is lesbian but the fact that she has hid it for so many years and married to cover it up- I do not look up to her as a feminist nor as a woman leader but think of her more as man- making mistakes and never admitting to them. After being in NZ and dealing with the cultural racism here, I can say that Helen never politically referred to people living in NZ as 'New Zealanders' in general (to apply to all people living in NZ) but only as "Kiwis." One cannot be called a "Kiwi" unless they are born and breed in NZ, and she must very well know this. I am ashamed that she now resides in my home country.
