Hitwise: Google powers 92.3% of New Zealand searches
According to figures released today by web traffic tracker Hitwise, Google is even more dominant in New Zealand than it is globally – and its dominance is growing.
For the 12 weeks to December 27, Hitwise says Google.com and Google.co.nz accounted for 92.27% of all New Zealand searches – a 2.68% increase on six months ago that will further feed the company’s already huge lead in search word advertising.
Yahoo’s various search properties were used for 3.36% of New Zealanders’ web queries, while Microsoft’s Live engine accounted for 1.63% of searches.
Google’s utterly overwhelming local dominance contrasts with Hitwise’s US results, which more closely reflect the search giant’s position around the world, and those quoted by other tracking firms.
Google accounted for 72.07% of all US searches conducted in the four weeks ending December 27, 2008. Yahoo accounted for 17.79% and Microsoft 5.56%, clawing back Google's lead by 2% and 1% respectively.

The rest are festooned with ads and poor heuristics.
Google does a search in seconds, and with minimal display requirements. Plus it has better , simpler goodies. And awesome freebies - 7.2Gb of mail space and counting. And a cool browser, Chrome, that blows IE7 into the weeds.
MS is ok, I have used it. Yahoo in its salad days in 1997 was awesome, liked it a lot, until it went all commercial, and now is almost useless for good searches.
Cnet is gone, and Altavista is moribund.
Of course, something new and better may arrive next week.......
We have often heard of "content is king" and Google's predominant share in the internet search space is indicative of this.
Google finds business data on finda.co.nz as a useful way of helping web surfers get the most relevant and updated information, which helps the users get what they are looking for. Quality content and updated data are most certainly and will remain the mainstay of a local search engine. Finda.co.nz excels in maintaining this.
I just ran an analysis of all the websites we host. For the month of May our analytics show Google to have a 92.2% share of all search engine traffic to websites we manage, mirroring to within 0.1% the share Hitwise reported. Google rocks in NZ. Why would you bother optimising a website for any other search engine?
