Iggy Pop picks his Kiwi nine
Iggy Pop’s Kiwi remake of his classic tune ‘The Passenger’ will be launched today to promote Orcon's new broadband network.
Mr Pop was commissioned by state-owned internet provider Orcon to remake a song of his together with nine New Zealand musicians to promote and celebrate the launch of the company’s new broadband network. The advertisement will be streamed and screened online and on TV today.
The song will be used for Orcon’s campaign to market its new network. The nine musicians were chosen from 200 who auditioned online to play with Mr Pop.
The nine musicians recorded the live track with Mr Pop via Orcon’s new network. Mr Pop sung and mixed the track in his studio in Miami, while the musicians performed and contributed to the song from New Zealand. Kiwi contributions included drums, the flute, bass and singing.
Orcon chief executive Scott Bartlett said the remake of the song was to show the “amazing things possible online” as the track was recorded entirely online and in many different locations.
“The results have outstripped what we thought we would achieve. Iggy, the band, and the team have created a brilliant track that demonstrates the talent lurking behind computer screens throughout New Zealand, and what happens when you link those screens together,” he said.
Apart from being used as an advertisement, it will also be screened as a music video.
Orcon’s Facebook profile, where auditions were posted, has (at the time this story was published) 3,897 fans. To see the fan page click here; to see watch the advertisement click here.
