IRD warns of new scam targeting taxpayers
Inland Revenue is warning taxpayers not to be fooled by hoax callers offering tax refunds.
IRD has had a handful of calls from the public about the issue.
Customer services group manager Eleanor Young says those eligible for a refund were told to make a direct payment of around $150 into a Western Union bank account.
Ms Young says those calls are definitely not from the IRD and people who are contacted should not deposit money into the account under any circumstances.
“Those running this scam are using the Inland Revenue brand to try to get money from people illegally and they may also be attempting to gain people’s personal details such as credit card and bank account details.
“If anyone has replied to those behind these scams, and given money or their personal details, they should contact their bank or credit card provider immediately.”
