Australian budget airline Jetstar has officially announced its assault on the domestic New Zealand air travel market with flights between Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Queenstown.
The Qantas subsidiary will start with two A320 aircraft from June 10 operating four city pair markets, before introducing a third A320 from June 24, subject to regulatory approval.
The airline is promising to beat any competitor by 10 per cent when booking at a similar date or time.
As part of the launch it will offer one-way internet-booked flights for $1 for travel between July 22 and September 22.
The $1 flights will be available for two hours from midday today unless seats sell out.
It will also offer web-booked one-way fares from $29.
The Jetstar services will replace Qantas' domestic flights in New Zealand.
"We won't be beaten on price and our low fares will take Jetstar into a price leadership position in domestic New Zealand markets backed by the Jetstar price beat guarantee," said Jetstar chief executive Bruce Buchanan.
Jetstar's entry in to the domestic New Zealand aviation market would result in up to 250 direct jobs under a newly established subsidiary and New Zealand flying business.
In June Jetstar will base a fleet of six A320s here, spread evenly between Christchurch and Auckland to support the carrier's domestic New Zealand and transTasman operations.
A Qantas code share will be offered on all Jetstar domestic and transTasman New Zealand services, including Qantas customers who hold a Qantas International and/or Tasman sector in the same itinerary.

Disappointing effort
I must say, I'm disappointed to see this PR stunt which is nothing but a reduction in service from Qantas as it attempts to exit the market gracefully. Existing services are 13 and this will go down to 12 per day under Jetstar.
Hopefully this won't be a thorn in the side of our national airline which is being forced to battle with Australian airlines on its home turf with deep pockets, but I imagine Pacific Blue will really bear the brunt of this new service.
3 x Wellington-Auckland flights a day sure isn't going to win any of my business from Air New Zealand.
The 250 direct jobs as quoted above doesn't really factor in the fact there won't be an Qantas jobs left in NZ. At least they've finally abandoned the market having offered such inferior on time performance for so many years.
I would have expected more.
Airline flight times
Agree with Nick. I routinely had flights cancelled or held over to late hours when flying Auckland to Christchurch due to "maintenance" issues in last 3 years. Good riddance. If Jetstar is managed with similar ethics we have nothing to look forward to here. Support Air NZ people, we own it, the more we use it the better they'll be able to service our country.
On Time Performance
We can only hope that JetStar can get its act together regarding getting planes off the ground on time. It has been a joke to where our staff refer to "Qantas Time" when booking. However we do not want to slip back to the boiled lollies and poor service provided by AirNZ in the days before deregulation. We should encourage good strong competition by giving Jet Star a chance to show that they can do things differently.
Sounds to me that the
Sounds to me that the Jetstar fares are worth just $1 anyway. I've never flown them.
