During the 2008 election campaign John Key ruled out increasing GST.
Yesterday the now Prime Minister said an increase was on the cards.
A recording of a Radio New Zealand journalist asking Mr Key about the election pledge has been posted by the Labour Party on website You Tube.
In it Mr Key was asked to rule out raising GST to 15 percent to cover deficits.
"National is not going to be raising GST," he said.
"National wants to cut taxes not raise taxes. We acknowledge the point that John Shewan (chairman of PricewaterhouseCoopers New Zealand) is making which is that there is a decade of deficits facing New Zealand unless we get it right.
"But that comes back to our core point. The fastest way to eliminate those deficits and get New Zealand back into surplus is to get New Zealand growing again."
Mr Key was asked if he would borrow more rather than pay taxes, he said governments would need to borrow in the difficult financial times.
"He's (Mr Shewan) talking about having to raise GST and the top personal tax rate maybe in five years time and what I am saying is if we do a half decent job as a government at growing our economy I am confident that won't be happening, that's not on our agenda."

Naive or bloody minded
Anyone who believes a politician sticks to their word is naive.
Anyone who believes a politician shouldn't alter their stance to accommodate current conditions is bloody minded.
Basically sticking to your guns is great, until the guns start pointing at your feet, at which point you need to re-aim.
Sh*t happens
Change or die
etc etc
Keep it up Labour. It's making you look even more like the whiny kid in the corner nobody likes.
i suspect you earn in the
i suspect you earn in the tax bracket that will be lowered. it's not about changing your mind its about going against something people voted him in for. he committed to tax cuts he hasn't delivered, and is now suggesting on taxing the poor and letting those of us who are a bit better of to go shopping
Do we need economists to sort out NZ's budget, or politicians?
The GST increase will ultimately be passed on to all NZ consumers, and he was talking about growing? The thing is every time the taxes are raised, they are raised a lot more than the possilbe cuts in the future. All they have to think it's some "reasonable" reasons to explain, and the government is still in deficit after the decade's growth under the Lbour. So what the hell happened to NZ's budget? Do more people think that the years under the Labour are more memorable than the last couple of years? Go Labour!
Times Change
The world has changed a lot since the election, New Zealanders are a lot better off that lots of countries. Some countries (UK, Europe & US) have skilled people unemployed. We mostly have unskilled or the perpetually unemployable out of work.
If you are not (or never have) leaned against the wheel of industry, then don't moan about your lot in life.
I was surprised they don't tackle the "Black Market" to raise more income.
aww bob feels angry
Any politician who makes statements of fact before knowing the facts is naive. Either that or he's saying anything to win an election..
Anyone who believes that accomodating current conditions justifies politicians altering their stance (and here "stance" evidently means entire economic philosophy) is bloody-minded.
As for friendly fire and sh*t happening, this is closer to the point. That's why I like John Key....he's doing a sterling job of ensuring that today's whiny (sic) kid in the corner is tomorrow's returned government.
But let's face it, politicians are the kids no-one likes. And Bob.....we all change and yet we all die....but only some of us think pat phrases, tautologies and obscurantism can pass for robust public debate.
Possible GST increase by Key Government
Regarding radio comment from 2008, what will Goff (and his media mates) scrape up next. If raising GST gets the best mix with reducing income tax (and giving people more discretional spending) then so be it.
The problem with this
The problem with this country is we're engendering a handout society. Whether its through the people like 'taxthepoor' or the maori, there's a underlying mantra that mediocrity is ok and that I'm due a handout. We're turning into a society of bludgers and the sooner the socialist/ bludger view is eiliminated and that goes for the ridiculous MMP system, the better. Do yourselves and the rest of us a favour; get an education and understand how a business runs. Clearly its something Phyllis Goof and his bunch of merry muppets have no experience in.
wrong about me
I am in that socio economic grouping that would benefit from the tax cut at the top end, i have an education and would like those people on the dole to get jobs where available but increasing GST on food, where many others have foods exempt, UK and AU is taxing the poor, with or without jobs. There are not enough high payed jobs for everyone we will always have poorer people. BTW john Key said he would look at giving more handouts to let the poor afford food! not your politics i believe?
