Meridian to keep $20m Oracle system despite setback

Meridian Energy still plans to implement Oracle’s $20 million computer solution despite the project being put on ice due to a managerial resignation and a counter offer from rival Gentrack.

Meridian Energy retail director Steve Ferguson left the company last Thursday after working for the energy provider for two years. He had previously worked for Kiwibank and was brought on board to develop better customer relations.

Last Friday, about 24 Meridian staff members were told the project, which included a system development and billing system replacement, would be put on hold.

Meridian Energy spokesman Alan Seay said the project would go ahead despite industry rumours it was to be axed. “The project is on hold. It’s going through an analysis phase. It’s best to put it on hold until we know how best to deliver it,” he said.

Gentrack marketing executive Aaron Baker said Gentrack would be happy to step into Oracle's shoes as it had the IT solutions to support Meridian Energy’s requirements. Gentrack currently outsources to Genesis Energy.

“We have a suite of products for utility companies to support their business at a fraction of the price SAP and Oracle charge,” Mr Baker said.
