Mitsubishi ad too sexy for British viewers
The iconic Mitsubishi Motors TV ad in which a father tries to answer the question “Where did I come from Dad?” is considered so effective that Mitsubishi UK has picked it up, only to sail straight into trouble.
The ad was made for Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand by Clemenger BBDO.
In it, the father goes to elaborate lengths to explain where the boy came from while driving a Mitsubishi Lancer past several New Zealand landmarks.
The music track is the Dean Martin classic The birds and the bees.
British advertising classification authorities have ruled that the ad may not run before 9pm, disappointing Mitsubishi Motors UK. The ruling is based on what the authorities say is sexual content.
The ad is the third New Zealand made one to be picked up by Mitsubishi in the UK. The other two were of a fleet of Mitsubishi Colts playing soccer, and an ad for the Triton ute featuring the strap line “Get Hard” along with the Bob Dylan song Hard Rain.
Neither of those two ads fell victim to the censor.
