Research commissioned by the InternetNZ, the non-profit that administers the .co.nz domain, has shown that nearly two thirds of New Zealand businesses have no web presence at all - a statistic that InternetNZ CEO Jordan Carter calls “concerning” and something that should be remedied.
The same research shows that 97% of consumers use the Internet to search for products and services. This means nearly all of us are looking online, but we’re only finding a third of the businesses out there.
“Our research shows that New Zealand consumers love looking for websites that end with .nz, and that .nz sites are trusted far more than any other domain. Businesses are obviously unaware of this – as today, two thirds of New Zealand businesses are not reaching these people,” say Mr Carter - whose organisation will soon face competition from DotKiwi, the startup that will sell .kiwi domain names.
The research also illustrates the growing importance of mobile-friendly sites. About 65 percent of sole traders and 74 percent of businesses use mobile devices to access the Internet, but only a quarter of these businesses design their websites with mobile usage in mind.
InternetNZ subsidiary NZ Registry Services, which wholesales domain names, commissioned the research from Colmar Brunton In total, 1,003 respondents were recruited from the Colmar Brunton online consumer panel and 1,101 business people for the business panel.
Mr Carter wants InternetNZ to play a lead in encouraging small businesses to get online. “InternetNZ’s vision is for a better world through a better Internet. We can achieve that by helping New Zealand businesses get online, and in a way that is tailored to people; this way everyone benefits.”
