New Lynn’s $300m Newmarket-esque makeover
Funding for the redevelopment of New Lynn has been secured which will go towards upgrading the town centre as well as the rail and road.
The West Auckland area aspires to have a town centre like that of Newmarket according to Waitakere City Council's website.
“New Lynn has a future that one day will see it rival places like Newmarket as one of the most prestigious town centres in the Auckland region,” the website said.
“Millions of dollars are being poured into New Lynn right now by central and regional government and Waitakere City, with millions more to come, to ensure that it grows into a stunning place to live, work, do business, relax and be entertained. It will be a place people come to enjoy the experience that will be New Lynn of the future.”
As part of the project, a kilometre-long trench will be dug up through the railways corridor in central New Lynn. KiwiRail has committed $120 million to the trench, Waitakere City Council fronted $69 million for road upgrades and the trench.
Auckland Regional Transport Authority has put $13.6 million toward a new railway station, with Waitakere City Council contributing an additional $22 million and the balance funded by Watercare and the NZ Transport Agency.
"When this massive trench is complete, the double track railway will be lowered into it. This will allow trains to pass through the town centre in both directions every 10 minutes without holding up traffic flows, which will cross the railway on bridges," the Council website for the project said.
Transport Minister Stephen Joyce said one of the key issues for transport is getting the right balance of local, regional and national input and ensuring transport infrastructure projects are successfully matched with land use development.
“New Lynn has shown the way – and the importance of that investment mix. Congratulations to everyone working together to successfully manage and deliver what is a very challenging project,” said Mr Joyce.
One of the project's facets is Merchant's Quarter, an historic block that will be a new pedestrian focused "high street" heart to New Lynn with retail, cafes and offices.
The project is due to be completed by October 2010.

Sounds good what about the crappy shops at the western end of new lynn , they really need a make over. I have made the reccomendatuion to the council that we should have palm trees put into middle of the road with nice old style street lighting and bench seats.
the mall needs to get with the programme as well its old , out dated
and does not provide the same level of shopping experience as say Albany westfilds mall.
so come on lynn mall lift you game......
Excellent foresight by the planners who came up with the cutting edge Transport Oriented Development around the rail and bus interchange.
Was certainly a shambles prior and this work has massive potential to get people from shopping and accommodation onto public transport. The route from New Lynn to the SW motorway (airport) needs upgrading tho.
Can someone please get Hoyts or Sky City back into the movie complex - the furniture shop doesn't quite do it for me....the New World was also a very canny move
I was out there the other week, and YES New Lynn has potential. The rail trench is impressive, transport getting better, and there are signs of re-investment. I spotted an opening-soon New World, not a Pak'n'Save.
It still needs a lot of new paint everywhere, but the place could well come along and could easily capture some of the arts vibe from Titirangi or Henderson Valley.
We think it has potential as well that is why we are moving there! Well done Waitakere City Council- they should concentrate on the heritage part of this area like when the Potteries were in thier hey day and make a real attraction of it
