New metallurgy centre to underpin titanium venture
Science Minister Wayne Mapp says a new applied powder metallurgy centre at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic will be the innovative hub of New Zealand's emerging titanium industry.
The government has invested nearly $8 million in the titanium industry and the powder metallurgy centre was seen as significantly boosts the national advantage in the sector, Dr Mapp said.
While opening the centre in Tauranga today, he predicted the titanium applications industry could be worth $700 million each year to New Zealand by 2020.
The centre was a key piece of infrastructure for the titanium industry, said Dr Mapp.
"This facility is unique in New Zealand. It combines traditional and high-tech engineering," he said. "Companies can use it to turn ideas and technology into leading-edge products".
The Titanium Industry Development Association (TiDA) premises are in an engineering block at the polytechnic's Windermere campus and will work with various New Zealand companies to develop ground-breaking titanium alloy products for the international marketplace.
A Tauranga-based company, Titanox, is producing and supplying near-pure alloy powders from titanium dioxide and raw aluminium after using research from Waikato University's Professor Deliang Zhang to create titanium separation technology.
Titanium alloy powder – lighter and stronger than stainless steel – can be used for a wide range of specialised products including jet engines, car parts and medical implants like knee and hip joints.

DETAILS OF TITANIUM METALLURGY
Please, to be attentive - Tianjin Jianghailong Steel Co., Ltd.! (it isn't spam)
Swindlers have appeared on the metal market of China. Be careful! I want to share a very interesting article about criminals who are turning up in metal markets on Alibaba.com. Unfortunately, in our line of work, we see these incidences of fraud and similar scams on a regular basis.
The current issue of criminal swindlers on Alibaba.com involves those operating on behalf of Tianjin Jianghailong Steel Co., Ltd. ( http://www.cnhtlt.cn, http://www.tjjhl.com ).Their gang is engaged in theft and fraud on the market of steel products in China.
An extensive advertising campaign on the Internet adds credibility to the fraudsters, which is done by placing ads on Alibaba.com where Tianjin Jianghailong Steel Co., Ltd. publishes its products. It also refers to the Gold Supplier, 4th year, which adds confidence in that supplier.
The process begins when the swindlers offer their customers a metal at an affordable price. Money is then required to be transferred in advance at the rate of 30% as a prepayment. There is a 70% discount on loading the goods on board the ship and a variety of different tricks to make sure that work is only done when there is prepayment.
These criminals operate fraudulently in the metal market. Some of them have been around for years, allowing them the opportunity to perfect their craft. The way they are able to lure customers in and have them fall for the fraud is they offer the product at an extremely cheap price. This is such a lure that even managers experienced with purchasing fall for the trick. These criminals will be caught eventually, but until this time it is important that you only send money to firms which you know to have been working in metal for a long time. I do hope that the time you’ve spent reading this article will prevent you from falling victim to an act of fraud carried out by these criminals.
If you are a victim of Tianjin Jianghailong Steel Co., Ltd., you should contact the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Republic of China, or contact us via info@galvamet.md
