No cap on MPs' accommodation for Rugby World Cup

MPs won't have a cap on accommodation allowances within New Zealand during the Rugby World Cup.

Currently, members can claim $180 a day in accommodation in Auckland while on parliamentary business and $160 in other centres outside of Wellington.

With changes to MPs' spending and entitlements released yesterday by Speaker Lockwood Smith, members will no longer have a cap from September 1, 2011 to October 31, 2011.

A spokesman for Dr Smith said the change was to enable members to carry out business during the World Cup.

"No one knows what the cost will be and it would be impossible to get accommodation during the World Cup if they had that cap in place," he said.

"Certainly, the expected costs of accommodation will far exceed the cap."
