NZ On Air's neutrality questioned

The political neutrality of NZ On Air has been questioned.

Labour Party broadcasting spokeswoman Clare Curran said she understood that the independent government broadcasting agency was considering adding a clause to its covenant that would ban broadcasters from screening programmes likely to be an election issue.

“This is a knee-jerk reaction which sets a most concerning precedent,” Ms Curran said.

“The decision results from unhappiness within the National Party after TV3 screened a fact-based documentary on child poverty in New Zealand four days before the general election.

“Surely we want voters to be as informed as possible. NZ On Air should actively encourage broadcasters to screen programmes with political implications, as long as the programmes are balanced and allow the different sides of the debate to have their say.

“Given that NZ On Air is supposed to be a politically neutral agency, we are concerned that John Key’s electorate chairman was the board member to raise concerns about the documentary.”

That board member and electorate chairman is former TVNZ executive Stephen McElrea.

“If Stephen McElrea gets his way, the number of election-related TV programmes could decrease. This can only be bad for the state of our democracy,” Ms Curran said.

“The broadcast media has a crucial role to play in communicating with the public during election campaigns, and Labour does not want to see that role undermined by politically-motivated interference.”

I am absolutely disgusted by the actions of Stephen McElrea, acting on behalf of the National Party. What sort of a democracy is this, when our politicians seek to suppress information before elections? The majority of NZers voted because they thought John Key had a nice smile - is that really how we want our politicals leaders to be selected? Child poverty is a fundamental issue - and to seek to suppress information about it for political motives is abhorrent, disgraceful and inhumane. I don't believe we live in a dictatorship state, so NZers deserve better than this.

Well at least it shows National are sensitive to the issue. Whether they do anything about it remains to be seen.

Really Sue? What info did he suppress? He only suggested the state funded TV shows which push a political agenda maybe inappropriate during elections - a discussion we should have given electoral advertising/publicity rules.. And seriously if you voted for JKey cos' of his smile you really should be looking in the mirror before having a go at anyone else

I'm all for documentaries being played immediately before elections that highlight the destructive and negative influence of unions, and how the unions contribute to Labour and other left wing politicians.

What say you Ms Curran? Sauce for the goose is surely sauce for the gander.

Quite a complex issue I think. Bear in mind this will work for any programming whether its biased towards, National, Labour, NZ First, Greens etc. If this ban is imposed 1 to 2 weeks before the election I'd be happy with that. I thought the program in question was skewed in a certain direction and whether the facts were all correct I have no idea. Its a difficult one as taxpayer money is given to these people to make documentaries and programs and from what I can see there is little political influence in that area.

So no publically-funded political TV , but lets have the Prime Minister hosting talkback radio for the afternoon ...thats alright becos its the private sector i suppose ....

How appalling that anyone with any influence is even considering controlling Freedom Of Speech in a democracy. Such people should be removed from any position of influence immeditately.

State TV and radio have such a pronounced left wing bias in their presentation of almost all their news that a review of their neutrality is well overdue. Freedom of speech is a gi en to be retained but the bias has no place in publicly funded media

Don't skew the argument, freedom of speech is not in question here, it's purely the timing.
Surely tax payer funded programmes with a political skew should not be aired immediately prior to an election.
It's that simple really, air the programme the night after the election or the month prior - the freedom of speech still exists and the issue is still out in the public (the same public that paid for its production)

The documentary in question was so skewed to the left – it almost doubled back onto itself. As for TV3 – well they couldn’t be more leftist if they were operating out of the Labour Party headquarters. Totally biased reporting from them leading up to the election.

Besides – there’s no real poverty in NZ – only poor decision making. Visit the slums of India or Bangladesh where there’s real poverty. It’s the catch cry of the left that beneficiaries don’t have enough to live on, or to feed their children etc – yet the majority can find enough money for things like Sky TV, lotto, pokie machines, cigarettes, alcohol, fast food takeaways, branded clothing, mobile phones – and how many of those crying poor actually have a vege garden, make their own bread / baking? And spending their spare time furthering their education so they can secure a better paying job?

There’s no such thing as poverty in NZ – only adults electing to spend their benefit money on unnecessary items trying to keep up with the Jones’s. Talk to me from the poorest Indian slum about poverty and I’ll listen – here in NZ, it’s just a political football Labour like to kick around trying to gain election traction.

NZ on Air should have been kicked to touch when we all gave the broadcasting fee the fat raspberry so many years ago.
Its just a ministry of propoganda one of the endless rorts this country has gifting dosh to a lucky few.

Hey Solidarity , what was skewed about the doco? it showed things you weren't comfortable with, it told the truth? can't have that in our rose tinted world around election time can we and before all you greedies hammer on about state funded TV programming, let me remind everyone that is the only system we have, some you are talking like there is an alternative. Here's an example of how punitive and dumb we are...the Government puts the price of tobacco through the roof so poor people can't afford it and because they are addicted they sort of have no choice but to be 'silly' and spend money they shouldn't, even though there is evidence that says only 3% of Maori and Pacific folk have given up because of price. Last time I purchased a pouch of tobacco in the States four years ago it was $3:50, the same here is now $47.00, while it's still under $5.00 in the US. Who gets most of the money from this 'irresponsible' spending by beneficiaries, yeah the Government. So grow up the lot of you and get real about what is happening in NZ. Well done Bryan Bruce you are a frickin' legend and to TV3 for having the balls, good job. Sorry to see that NZ On Air is infact feeling bullied by their masters, what does that tell you about our currency trader part of the 1% leader and his party eh?

umm - instead of spending $47 on tobacco and having ya kids starve or go to school hungry - how about the option of stop smoking and invest that $47 into food for the smokers dependants - or into education.

It's called accountability. Something the left never want for themselves to be held to...

I assume party political broadcasts are exempt from this rule?

I think graeme and solidarity are allowing their political views get in the road of the truth. Both need a smile and a wave from J. Key to make them feel better.

Solidarity and others admit there are always going to be a varying percentage of very average performers in life, you are never going to get this bunch to your lofty threshold of sensibility in the short to medium term, they just don't have it but they just don't go away either and for the first time in living memory on New Zealand TV Bryan's programme showed us some ways to do stuff that is proven to work. like putting doctors in schools and providing at least one default nutritional meal per day to every kid so they thrive despite their meat head parents who will never change and you have a problem with that,? or is it more about the good old punitive Kiwi culture of the relatively well off section of society making themselves feel superior by bitching about the failings of mother of 10. BTW it's got nothing to do with left or right, it's what works and what doesn't. And so it was around election time, linking that to skewing voting presupposes we are all easily lead mindless morons which we are not. A work colleague was murdered about a month ago by a 'kid' with the stereotypical look of being from one of 'those' families... we have to change the pattern of play to avoid this ticking time bomb which means keeping kids out of poverty, that doco showed us how.

I agree. I lived on a solo parent benefit for a couple of years while putting myself through Uni. It's not easy but with careful budgeting and proper home cooking (soak your own beans anyone?) it can be done. I now earn good money and can afford to enjoy the luxuries. I appreciate them all the more for my experience in managing on a benefit.

Most awesome Esther E - congratulations.

Labour have always had their election policies linked to offering welfare recipients even more money in return for their vote – to such an extent as to be fundamentally damaging for that individual and for NZ overall.

Damaging to the individual as there’s very little incentive to actually try to improve your own circumstances – and why would you if everything is handed to you from the government and all ya need to do is put your hand out… or in some cases not even need to ask for increased welfare.

Labour’s policies have encouraged generations of dependants on welfare – and yet Labour still try and claim they’re furthering NZ.

All Labour have achieved by doing so is to drive high earners (and hence high tax payers) off shore, making our taxes so much higher to support an over bloated nanny state that encourages a large percentage of the population to be reliant on the State. Socialism anyone?

The Labour Party and their philosophies should be taken to Court and charged with attempted sabotage of NZ and her overall interests and well being.
