NZ Post says not holding up mail without postcodes

New Zealand Post says it is not holding up mail without new postcodes, after the introduction of its new postal address standards last week.

An Auckland business association has accused NZ Post of taking up to five days to deliver a standard letter from Auckland to Wellington without a postcode, instead of about three days.

"We're hearing stories of businesses having important documents held up, and no doubt people's cards are arriving late for birthdays because of this over the top regime," said Newmarket Business Association general manager Cameron Brewer.

Businesses were also being charged more for their bulk-mail that did not carry postcodes.

"We understand there have been delays with the distribution of brochures that list the postcodes. What's more, NZ Post is encouraging customers to get on the internet to find out postcodes, which wouldn't suit a lot of people, particularly the elderly," Mr Brewer said.

NZ Post could not comment on the association's claims, but said it was meeting its mail delivery objectives 95.5 percent of the time -- FastPost the next working day between major towns and cities, Standard Post the next working day within the same urban centre, and three working days for standard mail to other domestic destinations.

"In fact standard mail between Auckland and Wellington is consistently delivered within two working days," NZ Post spokesman Keith FitzPatrick said.

"Where mail is delayed for any reason we'd like to hear directly from customers so we can investigate it."

NZ Post was not delaying mail without postcodes, but postcodes did ensure mail was delivered efficiently.

"For example, in the Auckland region alone there are 18 Beach Roads, so mail might be delayed while our teams try and work out which one it was meant to go to."

Use of postcodes was standard across the world, and over time were likely to become part of everyday life in New Zealand, he said.

Last week's changes required high volume mailers to use postcodes on their mail to qualify for bulk discounts, he said.

Postcode information is available on the internet, in PostShops, the main public libraries, and through NZ Post's customer services centre.

The problem is very very simple. NZ Post have mis-represented the entire post code change. They went to market with the "postcode" to the consumer however, NZ post require other deeply complex changes of their business mailers.

The costs and magnitude of change for business is extensive as a result. It's not just a postcode.

The problem is that in their flawed implementation of the programme and businesses not adopting their draconian-styled applied changes... businesses are inadvertently bulk mailing from databases with old and new postcodes. NZ Post are not able to automatically sort mixed lodgements... and are having to revert to manual processes to sort mail, that is why there is a delay.

Further to the previous - NZ Post appear oblivious to the significant drift between commercial reality, market needs and their own tactics and strategies....

Whilst they lump on million dollar costs to business in order to adopt overwhelmingly complex and constantly shifting standards....within a 2 year time frame...(which resemble nothing like the moderate postal address changes of other countries over time), they penalise the bulk mailer for not meeting these standards.......and have exacerbated their own declining mail situation by releasing an unfortunate series of ill-timed price increases...how not to win friends and influence....however, oblivious to the likely reactions of it's customers....at the same time they implement and waste tax payer dollars with business divisions that knock on the door with smiley faces...promoting the commercial use of mail as a marketing media....!

The sad but true part however, whilst it focuses on flawed and market irrelevant operational tactics - it culls the jobs of it's workers.

The fact is that NZ Post is being run in a clueless manner, at the expense of the postal worker, where it's management are not in touch with it's environment and the needs of the environment.(indeed continues to drift away from reality).... At the same time whilst NZ Post strangles itself...most enterprises are adopting more 'fashionable' (less out of date), alternative (to mail) and interactive methods of socially connecting with their customers - online, sms, email, text etc...

Summing it all up - NZ Post with costs of complying to deeply complex postal standards, price hikes and with a business team called the "brains trust" ....who appear stumped in offering a fresh business proposition (to redundant and increasingly declining mail volumes) ....NZ Post, through what are purely inappropriate and mismanaged behaviours, simply continues to waste tax payers dollars, accelerating it's own decline by pushing their mailers towards alternate, more effective and less costly means of connecting with customers - through its own actions...
