Other changes to food standards as folic debate rages

As debate rages over whether folic acid should be included in bread, Food Safety Minister Kate Wilkinson has announced more changes to New Zealand Food Standards.

The decision to add folic acid to bread from September was part of a joint New Zealand-Australia food standard agreed by the previous government, but one which Ms Wilkinson said she was "not a fan of".

Folic acid will be added to all bread -- except organic varieties -- in an effort to reduce serious neural tube defects, such as spina bifida and hydrocephalus, in babies.

New Zealand Bakers Association president Laurie Powell said the industry had offered to voluntarily fortify a significant range of breads aimed at the target audience, but that was rejected.

Women would need to eat 11 slices of bread a day to get their recommended dose of folic acid -- which Mr Powell believed they were unlikely to do.

Green Party MP Sue Kedgley said an Irish working group had recommended putting the fortification of bread on hold because of health concerns.

Labour Health spokeswoman Ruth Dyson said her party was pleased the National Government was going through with the introduction.

In other amendments to the joint Food Standards Code isinglass -- a form of collagen made from fish swimbladders and used to clarify wine and beer -- will be exempt from the requirements for mandatory declaration of certain substances in food.

There is not much isinglass left in the alcoholic beverages but vegetarians often boycott products made using it.

Lutein -- a naturally occurring carotenoid found in spinach -- will be allowed to be added to infant formula and formulated supplementary foods for young children.

Enzyme cellulase, produced from plant pathogen penicillium funiculosum, will be allowed as a processing aid.

The changes come into force on July 30.

This is a common sense attitude and is what should happen - that way we have the choice regarding Folic Acid.

Does anyone know what this could do to people who do not need it? Will there be adverse affects on men, and also older women who are not likely to have babies again, and what about very young children? There is no way that all bread should have this additive.

an Irish working group had recommended putting the fortification of bread on hold because of health concerns. What on earth is an "Irish working group". A bit of an arrogant phrase towards the Irish I think! Mind you though what else can you expect but A grunt from A pig especially A green pig!

Paranoid hillbillys will have you believe food additives are bad for you, but they are scientifically formulated to ultimately make us a better race of people.

The New World Order is obviously responsible for people turning into raving nutters.

That pointed out .... if adding folic acid to bread isn't going to make women reach the RDI then why bother? why do it? surely it's biggest effect is to give a false sense of securuty?

There are other sources of Folic Acid in our diet, we should be eating a whole range of foods, not just bread. Bread is a commonly consumed staple of most peoples diets, so it is a good vehicle for delivering a folic acid top up.

to all those clowns out there i have but one thing to say--- ignorance is bliss-- do your homework before you spout your mouth off

I haven't read all the info but following my experiences of folic acid/pregnancy, it needs to be made more available to women trying to help themselves and their future children. I had to pay my doctor $65 for an appointment every three months to obtain a script (5mg recommend after previous stillbirth) then another $10 for the script to be filled. Doctor took sympathy at cost of trying to help myself and prescribed six months worth however pharmacy refused to fill it insisting I was 'not allowed' more than three months worth (thankfully conception only took five months opposed to the 18 months for prior child). Probably nothing to do with the bread isseue but if I was easier/more affordable to access, we wouldn't necessarily need it added to our food products. Just a thought following my experiences.

This is nothing short of corruption to its extreme. The government should not be tampering with our food, telling us what to eat, how to dress, how to walk etc. But in this case they have not done so. In a seemingly harmless move they have passed of adding stuff to our food as an attempt to meet our diatrie requirements. Now although I dont agree with this on closer inspection this is not the case at all.

It was said that "Women would need to eat 11 slices of bread a day to get their recommended dose of folic acid" and if this is so then in no way will this policy fix any diatrie shortages.

But the government claims that their doing this to fix a dietrie shortage. Since their is no way that this new regulation will do so (and I doubt their that incompetent) their must be an alternative motive (secret agenda). And in my opinion any attempt of the government to act without the peoples consent while clouded in secrecy with unknown motives being held uncountable with nothing reining them in is corruption.

Personally I don't want to eat food that has been tampered with, be forced to have injections, live in a world of censorship where politicians decide what we can and can't see (especially given conflicts of interest). Where we can be isolated and cut of from the world (via new internet disconnection plans), where some people (Maoris) have more rights than others. Where we don't have to go to court to be declared guilty (see the new copyright laws relating to internet). Where people can own ideas even if those ideas could save millions of people. Where John keys collaborates with international companies and protects their interests over ours. But that's the world we live in.
