Plain tobacco packets likely here - Turia

New Zealand is likely to follow Australia's lead on requiring tobacco to be sold in plain packaging, Associate Health Minister Tariana Turia says.

Australian health minister Nicola Roxon has drafted legislation requiring tobacco companies to print their brand name in a specific font.

If the legislation is passed, cigarette packs would have to be sold in an ugly olive green because research showed this was the least attractive colour for smokers, Ms Roxon has said.

British American Tobacco Australia argued the proposal would infringe international trademark and intellectual property laws and could see ongoing court action.

Australia would be the first country in the world to mandate plain packaging of cigarettes.

Mrs Turia said the Government had already announced it would monitor progress on Australia's proposal to see if it could be done in New Zealand.

"We are very supportive of today's announcement by Australian health minister Nicola Roxon and it is my expectation that New Zealand will inevitably follow their lead and look to introduce the plain packaging of tobacco products."

The Government had already committed to making the country smokefree by 2025.

Government officials were talking to Australian counterparts on alignment and would report back to Cabinet by June 30.

Have we seen any stats which indicate the current packet warnings have had any effect on consumption esp. for youth?

Interesting that no government or regulator has the courage to outlaw smoking, yet they are happy to slowly (excude the pun) suffocate the tobacco companies....just keep on increasing the tax and that will reduce the tobacco company profits...they grow all their crops in third world countries and have no moral compass

I reckon, if they had a pic of Hone's mum, Tittiefy, on the packet of fags, it would put even the most ardent smoker of his stride. It really would.

How about making nutritional information compulsory on all alcohol also whilst at it?

Why is it alcohol is the only consumable not to clearly define nutritional information? Even pet food has more information available to the consumer.

And whilst eliminating all other types of blatant hypocrisy and double standards, when will NZ have a reasoned debate on decriminalising the adult use of a naturally growing herb amongst consenting adults?

It’s 2011 FFS – and the propaganda of the early 1900’s no longer fit the justification for the huge amount of wasted resources used in attempting to police the naturally growing abilities of this natural, God-given plant?

Surely God’s wisdom takes precedence over man-made rules?
