Poll looks at attitudes to Emissions Trading Scheme

A poll commissioned by a public relations company shows more support than opposition for the Government's proposed Emissions Trading Scheme.

However the biggest block in the DigiPoll commissioned by Exceltium of 514 voters were neutral on the issue.

The poll conducted by phone between June 20-27 found the ETS had 34.2 percent support and 24.3 percent opposition, while 41.4 percent were neutral.

Nearly half of respondents thought New Zealand should move with other countries on climate change while only 9.6 percent thought the country should be a world leader. Almost 30 percent said New Zealand should be a fast follower.

Nearly 90 percent of those polled were willing to take personal action to help fight climate changed but when asked if they were willing to pay an extra $10 a week this fell to 42.8 percent. Support for $20 was 16.3 percent. At $100 91.6 percent said they would not be prepared to pay.

Asked if the legislation to bring in the ETS should be dumped, 56.7 percent disagreed and 24.1 percent agreed.

Respondents were asked which party they would vote for. National got 54.2 percent support and Labour 30.2 percent.

The margin of error was 4.2 percent.

The g8 decides that because of climate change doom merchants, there will be a target of a 50 per cent reduction in man made CO2 emissions by 2050. As it is pretty certain that the price of ever increasingly scarce oil will by then be too high to economical burn as a mass fuel for the world, it is a self regulating problem. Seperate to the above, I suspect that NZ would benefit from a few degrees extra warmth, not that I hold out too much hope!
Although "climate warming " became the big news item only recently, it was in fact being seriously discussed 20 years ago, with almost the same predicted increase rates of temperature and sea level increases as is predicted now. As we now know, the actual increases have been far far less.

Meanwhile what a great excuse for extra bureaucracies, extra red tape, extra taxes, and great talkfests!

I for one can't see what good this so called scheme will do.

All that is happening is that one can emit as much as one chooses as long as you got the money to pay so emissions will not decrease.

Instead, the ones who are buying the units can continue emitting ... so where is the benefit?

I see a lot of people being conned into paying for something that is just hot air I also noticed that the warming of the Earth has been changed to climate change wich is very deceptive for climate change can mean anything from overheating to freezing, so why is the Earth no longer warming because we are all freezing so now in order to push through this money making scheme its called climate change.

New Zealand sould NOT be involved at all. It will cost every citizen a fortune for absolutely no gain whatsoever

Nothing to do with humans DONT TAX US FOR NOTHING. We are already taxed too much.
