Predicting earthquakes: Ring hedges his bets

Below, University of Waikato biological sciences lecturer and Science Media Centre Sciblogs contributor Dr Alison Campbell responds to "Moon Man" Ken Ring's recent prediction that there will be another Christchurch quake on March 20.

NBR has a standing invitation to Ken Ring to respond.

Read NBR's original story on the furore here. - Editor.

Fellow SciBloggers Peter Griffin and David Winter have recently written posts on Ken Ring’s (in)ability to predict earthquakes (here and here).

This is something I’ve also touched on earlier and I thought I would follow up on it now – the specific issue I want to address is that of hedging one’s bets.

Last year Ken wrote about the possibility of a ‘moonshot’ affecting New Zealand – a major earthquake triggered (he believes) by the close approach of the moon. (As David’s already pointed out, there appears to be no such causal link.) When I asked him about this on my own blog he seemed to pull back from his initial statement, saying instead (here in the comments thread) that:

As to the 20 March, the “one for the history books” comment came from an interview with Marcus Lush. I was just agreeing with him to be obliging. I do not hold that 20 March WILL bring a severe earthquake to Canterbury, but an extreme weather event is possible that day worldwide, and an earthquake within 500kms of the Alpine Fault is a risk on that date. More likely to be a 4-6mag.

In this comment he appears to be pulling back from his original statement (and being a little disingenuous – the “one for the history books” comment was also made on the Silly Beliefs blog, for example).

He’s also hedging his bets – the phrasing here is so vague that just about any untoward event would count as an accurate prediction. Just what would qualify as a “severe weather event”? Will it really be “worldwide” – as in the sense of “global” – or is this statement intentionally broad so that any instance of severe weather on March 20th, anywhere in the world, could thus count as a ‘correct’ prediction? (What is “severe”, anyway?) I have asked Ken for clarification on this, on the SciBlogs mirror of my blog, but so far – despite him saying there that “I never shy away from questions” – I’m afraid I’ve had no further clarification.

Imprecision
The same imprecision is present in the statement about the risk of an earthquake “within 500kms of the Alpine Fault”.

Assuming we’re talking about 500km radius (again, I’ve had no clarification from the author of this statement) – well, heck, that’s a huge area: all of the South Island and a fair bit of the North as well. And we have earthquakes all the time in New Zealand – the country’s not called ‘the shaky isles’ for nothing! So again, this simply cannot count as a prediction; it’s simply stating the obvious. (And in a recent post on his blog, Ken has said that the Alpine Fault itself seems to be fairly inactive at the moment. However, as we have said, it could be anywhere in NZ, or it may not even happen at all. Again, this is extremely vague and effectively covers all possible options.)

Inconsistencies
There are other inconsistencies in Ken’s various postings. For example, on October 13th he’s on record as saying that it was unusual to have one large quake followed by another in the same area, so that there was probably little risk of another large earthquake following the September 4 event. More recently, with his claims to have predicted the terrible event of a week ago, he seems to have reversed this position.

Leaving aside the accuracy of that claim, there are other questions that I would like to see answered. (After all, when scientists change their minds they are up-front about the reasons for doing so.)

Moon still in its usual place
And as you might expect, my questions relate to evidence: what’s changed, between those two oh-so-different predictions? Ken Ring claims that his ‘predictions’ are based on his reading of the position and movement of the Moon, planets, and stars (on astrology, in other words – his characterisation of the Moon as a planet would bear this out).

But the Moon is still in its usual place, the planets haven’t changed their courses, and if the stars do move it’s going to be a very long time indeed before we know anything about it. So what was the basis for his reversal of opinion? I’ve asked, but to date I’ve had no answer.

Vague
Various commenters - on SciBlogs pages, Silly Beliefs, the comments relating to the now infamous February 28 Campbell Live interview, and elsewhere – have said that in their opinion Ken Ring’s ‘predictions’ are accurate; they’ve seen them come true.

The problem is though, that such vaguely worded ‘predictions’, with their lack of precision, are so wide open that they lend themselves to confirmation bias. Something happens, and if it falls within the wide boundaries of a particular claim, then there’ll be a tendency to regard that claim as having been accurate.

Waiting for March 20
So what’s it to be, on the 20th March?

A quake in the South Island – which given the dreadfully high frequency of aftershocks from the latest event is effectively a given, or somewhere else in NZ?

Somewhere in the ‘Ring of Fire’ that runs along the boundaries of the Pacific tectonic plate? (This is not an idle question – Ken has said that the 7+ [which he was 'predicting' for February] is sure to be somewhere in the “Ring of Fire”, where 80% of all major earthquakes seem to occur, and NZ is at the lower left of this Ring. There are earthquakes along that plate boundary all the time, so any event would have been viewed as a successful ‘hit’.)

A worldwide ’severe weather event’, or maybe a ’severe weather event’ somewhere in the world.

Take your pick.

But please don’t tell me that such ‘predictions’ could be construed as accurate.

Interesting read but got the feeling from a pure laymans perspective that Dr Campbell took a rather long winded way of saying she thought Mr Rings prediction was too loose to be relevant.
Unfortunately this debate could be equally applied to the scientific communities debate on the ETScam the result of which is costing us terribly when misused by politicians et al.
Again from a laymans point of view could Dr Campbell please explain (quote - "But the Moon is still in its usual place, the planets haven’t changed their courses") how I see the tide outside going up and down with seeming regularity ...some high some low.

Are there earthquakes every 6.5 hours or so - like the tides?

@ Pete: where you see 'longwinded' I see 'thorough'.

Again from a laymans point of view could Dr Campbell please explain...

Seriously? Allow me: it means the position the moon and planets *will* be has always been known and has not changed. (Yet the prediction has changed. Hence the question - what's up with that?)

Are there earthquakes every 6.5 hours or so - like the tides?

No.

http://www.geonet.org.nz/earthquake/quakes/recent_quakes.html

Unless by '6.5 hours or so' you' mean a Ken-Ring-like 6.5 hours plus or minus 6.5 hours.

'within a 500km radius' could also include downards. so if there is a large earthquake 100km below the surface it will count as a successful prediction despite nobody feeling it at all.

Lame ken ring, very lame.

....about as accurrate and as consistent to the "consensus" as the IPCC / NIWA / East Anglias corruption...sorry....view on Global Warming?

Thanks for giving us another perspective.
It's wonderful to have something else to think about other than the constant stress of waiting for the 19 - 21 March.

If the scientists had any substance we would all ignore the moon man.

The problem is they haven't any substance.
In regard to the Christchurch earthquakes. They haven't a clue if the recent earthquakes are after shocks or new earthquakes. They are divided on whether the fault line near the Port Hills that caused last weeks shake is a new fault or not.

Scientists are like economists - they are all fluff and work historically - ie reactive

So no bloody use to anyone if you are living in an active quake zone. At least the moon man gives you something to think about and he is easier to understand.

Dear anonymous,

You see, science is an active debate in search of truth. The scientific approach it to take your best understanding based on the information you have and to update it when you get new information. That's why scientific knowledge changes so much -- because scientists are not afraid to say: "everything we thought we knew was wrong." Without that fearlessness, we would be stuck with archaic dogma (e.g. the earth goes around the sun and the planets wobble on their orbits of the earth).

Scientists don't like to make wild predictions they can't back up. Ken Ring is not afraid of letting evidence (or lack of evidence) get in the way of a great story.

Things that are easy to understand are often simplistic. Why would you want something that is simple, but wrong?

Of the 16,650 earthquakes over 4.0 magnitude in NZ since 1960, I have predicted 8,325 of those earthquakes over the last 50 years.

My future predictions for Christchurch are:
1. There will be another earthquake on 20th March.
2. There will not be another earhquake on 20th March.

If you would like to know if an earthquake is due in your town tomorrow, send money now. I will guarantee to refund your money if I don't have a 50% success rate.

Thanks Matthew Walker for confirming how useless scientists are.

What is their function? Shouldn't they be reclassified Scientific Historians then.

Most other professions you produce something and there are clearly defined milestones and deliverables. Scientific Historians seem to have no tangible outcomes and many are funded by big corporates that tends to taint their findings somewhat.

Hey anon,

Science produces outcomes, they're called knowledge.

If your rant is actualy about job performance evalulation then a) you must be great at parties and b) you might want to read about the PBRF: http://www.tec.govt.nz/Funding/Fund-finder/Performance-Based-Research-Fund-PBRF-/

There was another prediction of a M4.5-M6.5 about Mar 15+/-3 days

Scientists always try to discredit chellenging paradigms, while at the same time being seemingly immune themselves. Was it 'scientists' of the time who thought that the world was flat? And it was the medical scientists of the time who took a lot of convincing that washing hands and sterilising instruments might reduce the infection rate for surgery! And I do think that it was computer scientists and the assopciated IT industry who made billions from the rest of us over the Y2K scam. And wasn't it scientists who had the world scarted witless over the Bird Flu pandemic - meantime the Pharmaceutical companies made billions. People like Ken Ring do push the envelope and challenge the mainstream thinking. They will always be shot down by those who have an alternate agenda.

Yes, and that prediction was made by one of the world's top (so called credible mainstream...) seismologists in the US.

Time will tell.

But "climate science" is settled. What are you saying? that "climate science" is not science?
Is it "climastrology"?

In response to Pete | Friday, March 4, 2011 - 9:26am

Totally agree re: eco-fascist wealth redistribution agenda being underpinned by shonky data. Interestingly you may recall that when the met service had problems with their 'new' modelling system a few years back...that they were pinged for using Ken's data on the front-end of their site (without his permission or crediting him as a source).

Global Warming...er I mean Climate Change...er...look I've been on hols so help me out as otherwise I'll lose my research funding...are we in the middle of a warm period or about to enter an ice age this week,

GAIA’S NEO-MALTHUSIANS: SOME DEPOPULATION QUOTES…

“Society has no business to permit degenerates to reproduce their kind”
Theodore Roosevelt

“Malthus has been vindicated; reality is finally catching up with Malthus. The Third World is overpopulated, it’s an economic mess, and there’s no way they could get out of it with this fast-growing population. Our philosophy is: back to the village.”
Dr. Arne Schiotz, World Wildlife Fund Director of Conservation, stated such, ironically, in 1984:

“A total world population of 250-300 million people, a 95% decline from present levels, would be ideal.”
Ted Turner, in an interview with Audubon magazine

“There is a single theme behind all our work–we must reduce population levels. Either governments do it our way, through nice clean methods, or they will get the kinds of mess that we have in El Salvador, or in Iran or in Beirut. Population is a political problem. Once population is out of control, it requires authoritarian government, even fascism, to reduce it….”
“Our program in El Salvador didn’t work. The infrastructure was not there to support it. There were just too goddamned many people…. To really reduce population, quickly, you have to pull all the males into the fighting and you have to kill significant numbers of fertile age females….” “The quickest way to reduce population is through famine, like in Africa, or through disease like the Black Death….”
Thomas Ferguson, State Department Office of Population Affairs

“In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill…. But in designating them as the enemy, we fall into the trap of mistaking symptoms for causes. All these dangers are caused by human intervention and it is only through changed attitudes and behavior that they can be overcome. The real enemy, then, is humanity itself.”
Alexander King, Bertrand Schneider – Founder and Secretary, respectively, The Club of Rome, The First Global Revolution, pgs 104-105, 1991

“I believe that human overpopulation is the fundamental problem on Earth Today” and,
“We humans have become a disease, the Humanpox.”
Dave Foreman, Sierra Club and co founder of Earth First!

“We must speak more clearly about sexuality, contraception, about abortion, about values that control population, because the ecological crisis, in short, is the population crisis. Cut the population by 90% and there aren’t enough people left to do a great deal of ecological damage.”
Mikhail Gorbachev

“Today, America would be outraged if U.N. troops entered Los Angeles to restore order. Tomorrow they will be grateful! This is especially true if they were told that there were an outside threat from beyond, whether real or promulgated, that threatened our very existence. It is then that all peoples of the world will plead to deliver them from this evil. The one thing every man fears is the unknown. When presented with this scenario, individual rights will be willingly relinquished for the guarantee of their well-being granted to them by the World Government.”

“War and famine would not do. Instead, disease offered the most efficient and fastest way to kill the billions that must soon die if the population crisis is to be solved. AIDS is not an efficient killer because it is too slow. My favorite candidate for eliminating 90 percent of the world’s population is airborne Ebola (Ebola Reston), because it is both highly lethal and it kills in days, instead of years. We’ve got airborne diseases with 90 percent mortality in humans. Killing humans. Think about that. You know, the bird flu’s good, too. For everyone who survives, he will have to bury nine”

Actually those "scientists" who thought the Earth is flat were thinking based on their pseudo-science, just like Ken Ring does.

Farmer B was using irony geezer!

The moon's gravitational pull on th earth is not astrology.
The skin of the earth is like an onion skin.
Under this, is a molten mass, also subject to gravity, and the moon. The moon has a complex orbit. That's why tides differ, nothing to do with astrology. GNS PREDICTED severe earthquakes in 1995 and no one took notice, yet no one attacks them now.

You, being "so called expert", talk too much and achieve practically nothing really important. At least Ken RING did a right prediction, obviously all of you on the NZ Public Employment wanted and did "discredit" him.
Now, look at what is the consequence of ignorance!

I love the last statement,
"But please don’t tell me that such ‘predictions’ could be construed as accurate."
Like the weather, does that mean we should put the met office in the same bucket ? and rant how they just get lucky :)

Dead right!. I was being facetious; I'll try harder next time.

I note that scientists in other parts of the world are looking at this very question. Why are our scientists taking such a defensive stance?

In response to No Time | Friday, March 4, 2011 - 11:31pm

I am a Ken Ring supporter. My point is that many so called expert scientists have an agenda other than pure scientific discovery. Using direct quotes from them and their supporters says it all. The main point being that everyone is entitled to an opinion EVEN if it does not toe the line of the NEW UN ORTHODOXY. Engage free thought or join the sheeple 1hilst ther is time No Time for pillocking around.

Real scientists know that their knowledge is at best, sketchy. History shows that the worst and most arrogant "scientists" are those who attack anyone with a different approach. This human aspect also manifests itself in the medicl field, and is well documented.

In response to Anonymous | Saturday, March 5, 2011 - 9:20am

Entirely agree with you and eco-agenda. Pure science is exactly that...pure and unencumbered by political agendas.

Interesting to note that March 20th is the date of the vernal/spring equinox in the northern hemisphere. In Jewish tradition it is also the feast of Purim.

I wonder if Ken Ring has some kind of religious-Pagan- Magian-mystic Christian bent that we are unaware of? The full moon precedes the equinox by a day.

Also interesting to note that we had a elderly Christian in the States predict the 'rapture' occurring on the 21st of May - date on the ancient sun god festival of Apollo known as the Thargelia.

Could a lot of this be pre-cursor fear stoking in the build up to the ultimate bogeyman of the current 'end-time' fad - 2012?

I don't agree with the way Campbell hijacked Ring in his interview but I do agree that there has been far too much fear mongering.

The take home message from the Christchurch earthquake should preferably be not to live your life in anticipation of fear, due to a need to believe that you can know something so random is coming, but to accept that any day on earth could be your last for any number of reasons and that it is inescapable fact that there will be a last day for all of us.

Knowing this, make every day you have count, make it worthwhile. But, certainly, don't spend it cowering in fear, because that is a day wasted.

No one can predict earthquakes. No-one!

We can't even predict the weather correctly.

Regardless of whether Ken Ring is right or not, the fact still remains - we will have more earthquakes, big and small.

Humanity needs to adapt.

Have just read Ken Ring's site. He says " However, as we have said, it could be anywhere in NZ, or it may not even happen at all."

It's twice as good a prediction than Mac 1:14 up there. Ken's chances of being correct are 100%.

How ignorant can you be sitting on a computer typing about how "scientists are useless" ... everything that makes communication and your life easier came from science and a scientist. Go improve your life or someone elses and stop writing mindless drivel.

I live at Tira Ora Estate, in the Pelorus Sound of New Zealand...my humble opinion the future earthquake prediction is quite certain due to the frequency of aftershocks. I think it would be wise to leave the area until the land stabilizes. When one is ice-skating and the ice begins to crack...a sensible person would leave the ice, and get to safety. Last Point: We live outdoors more than indoors, on a 550 acre property, with mountains that shelter our bay. Weather extremes were experienced Tira ORA on the day of Christchurch's Earthquake... Very high tides that we expect with the full moon, rose to flood our Mermaid Cafe, dance floor and picnic area. We will be stowing things away in anticipation of powerful weather, and strengthening earthquakes.

Historical and Scientific reality now in play

July 22, 1973 USA Senate passes resolution S.71 calling on US government to “seek the agreement of other governments to a proposed treaty prohibiting the use of any geophysical modification as a weapon of war. The third activity listed was “any earthquake modification activity which has a purpose, or has one of its principal effects, the release ot the strain energy instability with the solid rock layers beneath the Earth’s crust.” Bulletin of Atomic Scientists May 1976
1975 USA Senator Claiborne Pell, stated that: "We need a treaty now...before the military leaders of the world start directing storms, manipulating climates and inducing earthquakes against their enemies." http://members.iimetro.com.au/~hubbca/geo_science.htm
June 5, 1977, New York Times described the great earthquake which destroyed Tangshan, China on July 28, 1976, and killed over 650,000 people.
Just before the first tremor at 3:42 am, the sky lit up like daylight. The multi-hued lights, mainly white and red, were seen up to 200 miles away. Leaves on many trees were burned to a crisp and growing vegetables were scorched on one side, as if by a fireball.
Jan 1978, Dr. Andrija Puharich, MD, LL.D, issued a detailed research paper entitled 'Global Magnetic Warfare - A Layman's View of Certain Artificially Induced Unusual Effects on The Planet Earth During 1976 and 1977.' In his paper, Dr. Puharich stated, "Of the many great earthquakes of 1976, there is one that demands special attention - the July 28, 1976 Tangshan, China earthquake."
Jan 1978 edition of Specula magazine ran an article which described an incredibly profound phenomenon that could be produced within the Earth by what is called the 'Tesla Effect.' According to the article, electromagnetic signals of certain frequencies can be transmitted through the Earth to form standing waves in the Earth itself. In certain cases, coherence to this standing wave can be induced wherein a fraction of the vast, surging electromagnetic current of the Earth itself feeds into and augments the induced standing wave. In other words, "much more energy is now present in the standing wave that the ...amount being fed in from the Earth's surface." By interferometer techniques, giant standing waves can be combined to produce a focused beam of very great energy. This can the be used to produce earthquakes induced at distant aiming points.
April 1997 USA Secretary of Defense William Cohen stated at a counter-terrorism conference sponsored by former Senator Sam Nunn

"Others are engaging even in an eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves... So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations...It's real, and that's the reason why we have to intensify our ef " [what other countries!]

Even you find reading the long comment or essay pretty boring too....

The assumption of the world is flat = lack of knowledge about the geography of the world due to the difficulty of travelling/communcation.

Believe in the lies of Ken Ring = pure gullible and naive shaken minds who want to hold on to something 'certain'.

What a waste of time Kiwis.

Well actually, in regard to the claim that the moon is still in the same place etc, etc.
No it's not. The difference between the apopgee and perigee of the moon is around 50,000kms. The perigee in the 20th of March sees the moon at a distance of 352K kms as against the apogee of around 404K kms. Seems to me there is indeed some reason to expect a stronger gravitational pull as will be the king tides that we know will occur.

It is a shame really that when someone like Mr Ring is just trying to save lives we have scientists that are so narrow minded in their own beliefs that if their theory is not conformed to, then any alternative theory cannot be right. No wonder the world is falling apart with idiots like this as our so called scientists.

You say the moon, planets etc is in the same place? I think you are wrong.

Dear god are there no moderators at NBR to delete all to the off-topic crap above? zzzzzzzzzzzzzz!
LaRouche-ism and HAARP conspiracy theories? So much for Chemtrails keeping the mentally ill docile!

I am looking a it like this, I have read and read varying types of information from Ken Ring to the scientific. I think that as a Cantabrian I have the right to feel how I want about all of the predictions etc. I am taking what Ken Ring is saying as a warning rather than a prediction. I will be staying in my own home, not fleeing, but purely because I know my own home best!! If we are in complete black-out like we have been before I can find my way around etc I have up-dated my emergency survival supplies and equipment.... not just because some-one has told ME that there could be another scary earthquake, but because it is something that I should have done along time ago. No-one got all strung out when Peter Elliot stood on the TV's infront of us warning us to BE PREPARED, years before these quakes. Ken Ring ( and his followers) seems to acknowledge that he has sceptics and dis-believers, but every web site where the opposing theories (Moon man VS GNS scientists) appears, I can't get over how cruel and nasty the supposed scientists become. So I'll be prepared, have enough water and food for up to 4 days for myself and my family, because I have my own theory..... I am a MUM of some freked out and vulnerable kids right now, so it is my job to protect them and be as ready as I can be in case we are in the direct line of mother nature!!! God Bless ChCh and all my fellow Cantabrians xoxoxoxo

At last, someone with common sense. I wish you the best. And i hope Mr Ring is incorrect. God bless all.

Well 5.1 stirred a few of us out of our beds or off the pc as the case may be. March 20 2011 just before 10pm....Ken Ring truth or fiction? Lets not lose sight of the fact we are living this nightmare and it's not over yet!

In response to Anonymous | Friday, March 4, 2011 - 11:24am

So it's fine if he's totally wrong, as long as he gives you SOMETHING to think about?

Totally flawed reasoning. Just because what we have doesn't help does not mean that anything that 'gives you something to think about' is right.

In response to Eco Agenda | Friday, March 4, 2011 - 5:33pm

For gods sake, did you try and quote the entire known world in that post?
TLDR - In case you are unaware, that stands for Too Long, Didn't Read.

The interval between two strong quakes in Japan from 11 March 5h 46m 7 April 14h 32m exactly 27d 8h 46m.
Time for a tour of the Moon around the Earth exactly 27d 7h 43m. The difference is just 1h 03m.
I ask: Who makes earthquakes? Tectonic plates or the moon?
