PRIVATE BIN: 'The Don' trumped by real estate slump

Donald Trump’s wallet is taking a hit, with developments in strife around the globe thanks to a perfect storm of economic conditions.

International media reports detail a variety of troubled ventures that Mr Trump took on in sunnier times, before the credit crunch hit and the property market deflated to a level somewhat resembling sanity.

One Trump Organisation project, a 62-storey skyscraper in Dubai, has had to be put on hold due to the sudden collapse of the luxury apartment market in that country.

But that’s not the only tower that has the property magnate in trouble. Mr Trump is being sued by Deutsche Bank, which claims he defaulted on a $US640 million loan he took to build a Chicago tower taller than the Empire State Building.

And it appears Trump Entertainment Resorts is at risk of going bankrupt for the third time in 20 years, with shares having declined by 99% since 2006.

Trump Entertainment Resorts also skipped a $US53.1 million interest payment on December 1 due to its financial troubles; however, Mr Trump’s PR team stresses that his holdings in the company represent less than 1% of his total fortune.

Over in Scotland, a £1billion golf course and luxury homes complex on un-spoilt coast in Aberdeenshire has yet to tee off, leading some Scottish MPs to wonder if it will ever get built.

Considering the speed and extent of the real estate crash around the world, speculation will surely mount about Mr Trump’s billionaire status, and even whether he’s at risk of a repeat of his near-bankruptcy in the 1990s.

Journalists have to tread carefully, however; the host of hit show The Apprentice once sued an author for claiming him to be merely a millionaire, not a billionaire.

What effect the current economic climate will have on Mr Trump’s fortune is uncertain, but one thing is for sure: the master of self-promotion is only one of many billionaires discovering that the bigger the bubble, the messier the pop.
