Iconic Remuera retailer Garlands Design has closed its doors and gone into liquidation after more than 50 years in business.

Garlands’ noted Christmas window displays drew visitors from across the city, the Remuera Business Association says.

Garlands Furnishings opened 52 years ago in the Strand Arcade off Queen Street, before moving to Remuera quarters in the early 1970s.

The store has had several owners during its long history.

Current directors Wayne Hammond and Trevor Garforth bought into the store almost ten years ago.

Mr Hammond has also retired from his position as president of the Remuera Business Association.
