Maori Party MP Hone Harawira will have to apologise to the nation if he is stay in the party, the party's co-leader Pita Sharples says.
Mr Harawira has spent time in his Tai Tokerau electorate talking to elders and others about his future after being asked to consider leaving by party leaders following an abuse email while defending an unauthorised trip to Paris while on parliamentary business last month.
Dr Sharples said it was likely Mr Harawira would stay.
"It's looking that way. The way his iwi is talking, he's talking and the meetings I've been too."
However, conditions would be imposed.
"Given what's happened of course an apology to New Zealand, (for his) various statements and behaviour would be the minimum," Dr Sharples said.
"If he's going to come back in the party eventually we'd have to be working together as a caucus. We need his expertise and so on."
But there was likely to be a period of suspension.
"That's certainly got to be a possibility that we are going to think about."
Mr Harawira admitted in his weekly column in the Northland Age yesterday he had made some major mistakes.
"I have got a ways to go before I can get back on my horse and a lot of ground to cover to rebuild broken alliances. But these are the times when you really see who your friends are."
However, he also referred to the "rather astonishing statements from my party's leadership" during his enforced time out.
Dr Sharples said if he meant remarks he and co-leader Tariana Turia made about his behaviour, "he knows he's hard to control, so does his iwi".

Tui Billboard fodder
What would NZ need with an insincere, half-arsed form of contrition when he has blatently already claimed he would not apolagise, nor is he sorry, nor has he changed his attitude.
The Maori party need to wake up and realise any form of apolagy is like shutting the gate after the horse has bolted, or like Helen Clarke saying sorry for signing her name to a painting she didn't paint - all of it completely useless in reality and only a face-saving exercise for the individual.
The NZ public deserve much, much better. Anything less than dismissing him completely is a form of complicity by the Maori
party leadership - and only serves to highlight the leaderships own lack of morals and mana when dealing with a blatent racist and an individual that believes he is entitled to steal from the NZ taxpayer because he can.
Wake up Maori Party - show some respect for yourselves and the NZ public by not standing by an individual with such tainted perceptions, attitudes and actions.
He should be made to pay back his tax-payer funded salary and fired without hesitation for being such an embarrasing ambassador representing NZ on offical visits.
Maori Party
I agree Ripped-off.
Th Maori Party is a race based party - imagine the uproar from the Liberals if a "European Party" was started and someone from that party said he was sick of the MF Maori........ the guy would be out on his ear quick as a flash - double standards.
I also think the sooner MMP is voted out the better. The EFS is a classic example of very small party having bigger say in Government and using that influence to make the likes Ngai Tahu even richer.
What would you call it if a person qualifies for free housing insulation because of the colour of their skin?
what's the point
no point Harawira apologising for something he believes to his core. Let's not forget Turia's likening colonisation to the Holocaust. The Maori party have no respect for European New Zealanders and will never let go of the past because it pays too much.
I sugest you cut your ties
I sugest you cut your ties with the Crown first. Become a normal state and if anyone has any further issues with the Crown, let them fly to London and complain! :-) Otherwise, New Zealand will continue to be milked and milked and eventually will simply become a 3rd world pacific country. In my opinion, this country could have easily become the "Monaco" of the Pacific. You all know what it will mean if Maori Party does not fire this racist...
Interesting that he chose a
Interesting that he chose a European MF lawyer to represent him. Presumably thats because it was free!
Maori and Government.
We are a racist country. Honest good people are appalled and so sad we live with this. Our government has to do something. We are in a very grave place, This is so sad for all our people the we are all behaving and thinking such low forms of relationships to live together. How low can we go and what do we have as any future.
100% pure New Zealand is not honest and true. This all appalling.
We can now only pray to GOD to save us.
