Sky TV wins over TVNZ
The spat between Freeview and Sky TV appears to be over - TVNZ has announced that its two formerly Freeview exclusive channels, 6 and 7, will now be available to Sky subscribers, along with HD versions of TV One and TV2.
The two networks had a carriage contract for TV One and TV2 was scheduled to expire at the end of 2011. The new agreement runs to 2020.
The HD versions of TV One and TV2 will be available to MySkyHDi viewers from 1st June, and 6 and 7 from 1st July.
TVNZ will be able to provide regional advertising on TV One from July 1.
Needless to say, the win is huge for Sky; especially for its HD expansion plans which had been hampered by not having TV One and TV2’s offerings on board.
Consumers can now get the lot in a single box.
Freeview was introduced by the Labour government to assist in the transition from analogue to digital television, but quickly evolved into an ideological tool.
Labour’s hostility to private broadcasters saw run-ins with Mediaworks (owners of TV3 and C4) over funding, and saw TVNZ block its HD channels and new channels from Sky users.
Sky reciprocated by not making Prime available to Freeview customers, but the arguments are of a chicken before the egg scenario.
New broadcasting minister Dr Jonathan Coleman announced – even before he was elected –that he was platform agnostic and would eventually like to see TVNZ channels available on Sky.
Megan Richards, spokeswoman at TVNZ told NBR that Dr Coleman had no role in negotiations and that talks between TVNZ and Sky TV had been in progress for a significant time.
The current economic climate is partially to blame and the added two million in subscribers will be a boost to TVNZ’s regional and national ad revenues.
With the change, Freeview has effectively lost any edge it once had over Sky, and returns to simply being an digital facilitator of free television, which may well harm its subscriber uptake.
Steve Browning of Freeview doesn’t think so, and says the TVNZ had kept him in the loop.
He always expected TVNZ 6 and 7 to be on Sky, but for consumers the main pusher for Freeview has been the classic free viewership versus a pay model.
“The added exposure on Sky may well draw attention to what consumers can get elsewhere for free,” he says.
When Sky spokesman Tony O’Brien was asked whether it would now renege and allow Prime to be broadcast on the Freeview network, his answer remains unchanged.
“The two issues aren’t really connected. John [Fellet] has said Prime will appear on Freeview when it makes economic sense to do so, and at this stage it doesn’t,” he says.
Given Prime produced some terrible advertising numbers at its half year result, Sky could probably learn a lesson or two from TVNZ.
Mr Browning says that the future of Freeview is not in any doubt, and he has been given full support of the broadcasting minister.
As for Sky? Expect that share price to fly.

This is sick. Coleman has ordered this to keep his business buddies happy. And the fact the Sky haven't reciprocated by taking the encryption off Prime makes it sicker still.
FINALLY!
Doesn't "FREE" mean free. Isn't public FTA supposed to be available to all? Why should I have to buy another box to watch what my tax goes towards!
Well done Sky & TVNZ at last a common sense decision!!
I can't believe Prime TV isn't available on Freeview! What a joke!
Part of the deal should have been that Sky have to make Prime available to Freeview - it seems that this is a one way street - Sky get what they want and joe public misses out.
This is just another reason for me to refuse to have Sky TV - although telling them to stop phoning doesn't work!! Nor does emailing them to have your phone number removed from their calling list - and my number is registered with the Direct Marketing Association for NO CALLS as well, but still Sky call me. They need to get their act together.
I totally agree, maybe TVNZ needs to upskill their people in negotiation! This should have provided loyal Freeview subscribers to get access to Prime.
I love the freeview service and love not having an ongoing and ever increasing fee from Sky to deal with especially considering the affects of the GFC.
Get tough people and put the customer first! Also let's see some affordable PVRs for freeview soon, this will help retain their base for sure... well at least me!
Very one sided alright.Prime should now be available on both Freeview and Sky.
I agree with the above comments. To quote from the article "Prime produced some terrible advertising numbers at its half year result" this no wonder to me as since getting A freeview STB I would be surprised if I've watched an hour of Prime since, due to the poor reception I get and the inconvenience of having to locate the other remote to change back to analogue. Seems like simple stuff Sky?
As much as I would like to see Prime on Freeview, Why would you think TVNZ as part of their negioations with Sky would insist Prime be on Freeview???? To dilute their viewership even more??? think about it...
Using your reasoning you would then expect "FREE" and "FTA" to also mean that you should not have to buy a TV or an aerial, and that they should be supplied to you, free.
Oh and I guess you want the electricity required to watch them, for nothing too.
this is another case of tories giving away my money in the form tvnz in return can i have two sky channels free i dought it giving them my tv channels will increase their share holding im reminded goverment ministers get sky free
Sky you get good Shows on Discovery,National Geographic.
Kids are entertained with Disney,Nickelodeon and Cartoon network.
Adults got good shows to watch on Box and Vibe.
Your a Fool to think Sky is a rip-off. Maybe your just too poor to afford Quality Broadcasting so you put up with the Ancient 1999 programming TVNZ offers BAHAHAHA!!! by the time TVNZ or TV3 get ahold of anything good the 6th Season of said show will be airing on Sky LOL!
