Smoke billows from Backbencher (PHOTOS)

A second fire in six months has hit popular Beehive watering hole The Backbencher. The cause was a metal cutter in the basement as the bar underwent a refit following a blaze that closed its doors in June.

Six fire engines were called to the scene mid-afternoon as smoke billowed from the pub, located across the street from Parliament.

The June fire damaged the bar's trademark Spitting Image-style puppets.

The Backbencher closed after the June fire. It is currently being refit for a reopening early next year.

There were no immediate reports of injury or major property damage.

O NO! My local...!

Its more like the insurance premiums are so high, they need a total new build

Are we allowed to hope that that Trencherman Supreme -- and one of 'the 20 GREATEST living (?) New Zealanders, ONZ -- and one-time applicant for a British pension to supplement his meagre salary as our representative to the Royal Court.....might just have been lighting up a post-postprandial cigar when the pressure around his ample girth required some release, with incendiary consequences?
I hope so....'cos i just did!

Hope the right set of puppets got burnt this time.
