Telecom launches turbocharged mobile data stick - network to, um, follow

Telecom has today launched its “TT-Stick”, the first mobile data device capable of supporting the HSPA+ upgrade to XT, which will allow for mobile downloads of up to a stonking 21Mbit/s. That is, faster than almost any landline broadband connection.

That’s a theoretical top-speed, however. Telecom says to expect an average download speed of 4Mbit/s depending on “variables such as surrounding such as building types and other users on the network.”

The TT-Stick will sell for $149 on a 24-month data plan. A new data plan, introduced concurrently, offers 8GB of data for $79.95 a month or (close your eyes, Commerce Commission) $69.95 if you have your fixed broadband account with Telecom. Formerly, 4GB was offered at that price-point.

A catch: Telecom has not actually upgraded its 3G network (aka XT) to support HSPA+ yet.

However, a nationwide upgrade is promised by Christmas.

Vodafone recently began an HSPA+ trial, limited to 100 Auckland customers. The carrier says it will begin a national commercial roll-out during 2010.

Both telcos’ 3G networks today use HSPA technology. To take advantage of the pending HSPA+ tubocharge, you’ll need to buy a new data stick that supports HSPA+, or a new cellphone that supports HSPA+ (currently, none are on the market).

2degrees is due to launch 3G data, running on HSPA, at an unspecified time in the New Year.

New Sony, Samsung phones for XT
Telecom has also announced several new phones for its 3G network including the Sony Ericsson Aino U10a ($999) and Samsung S6700 ($499).

The Sony Ericsson Aino U10a has an 8.1 megapixel camera and 3-inch screen, and can be used as a remote control for a PlayStation3.

The Samsung S6700 has 3 megapixel camera and support’s Telecom’s new mobile TV service.

Re: "got mine and its best performance was just under 16mbps"
yeah right mate! You must have been in another country on another network.

Re: "up to a stonking 21Mbit/s" - another yeah right! Only in perfect lab conditions. You may get 18-19 if you have your tush squarely on top of the base station antenna. More relaistic to expect around 14 for good sites and ~7-8 in general. What was that about false advertising.....
