Telecom looks at outsourcing more jobs

Hundreds of technical jobs at Telecom, concentrated in its Gen-i services division, are on the line as the company looks to outsource positions overseas.

Labour communications spokeswoman Clare Curran told The Dominion Post she had been told between 400 and 1500 jobs could go.

Telecom spokesman Mark Watts confirmed that "six or seven" companies had been asked to "workshop" proposals but it was not a formal tender process.

But Ms Curran said she had been told a tender process was well advanced within Telecom "that could and is likely to outsource a large number of hi-tech jobs overseas".

Any losses were expected to be concentrated in Telecom's in-house IT business Gen-i.

Mr Watts said no decisions had been made and the figures cited of possible job losses were speculation.

However, he could not confirm there would be no changes made or there would be no job losses.

Council of Trade Unions president Helen Kelly said the changes were a "narrow short-term move" by Telecom.

XT network

Maybe they could out source that and give NZ customers empty baked Bean tins and some string

Having Teir one customers

Having Teir one customers support handled by India (or similar "cheaper resource") would do more to damage Geni than anything else I can think of. They would be better off selling Geni, and having a prefered supplier agreement locked in as part of the sale.

What are they thinking??????

I hung up on their overseas

I hung up on their overseas so called customer services person recently when asking a simple question about a pre pay account. All kept getting was "so you want to change your cell phone plan?".
In the end I said if "bloody Telecom employed Kiwis I would be able to get my question answered!" and hung up on them. No wonder my internet is with good Kiwi company Actrix who patiently and comprehensively answer any questions that you have - not that I ring very often because their product and service is so good that you don't need to.

what a lot of self serving twaddle

need I say any more? Actrix and others should put their names on their comments

Off shoring - what about On-shoring?

Don't understand what the fuss is about.

Already a number of major NZ companies bring into NZ IT staff from India on short term work permits. These people are often on low wages (i.e. Indian salaries) and are expected to work long hours.
