Chris Quin, head of Telecom's Gen-i services division, said the free wireless service would "take the load off mobile".

The telco has already offered free local, national and mobile calling from its 300 payphones around the quake-struck city, plus free call-forwarding for those hit by property damage.

Telecom, Vodafone and 2degrees have all reported that their mobile networks are now fully operational, albeit with some systems still running on backup power.

Home and business fixed lines for Telecom and TelstraClear are "stable" bar where property damage has affected lines. As of Tuesday afternoon, there were still about 900 customers affected by problems with TelstraClear's cable network.

WIreless is always free at 4 Christchurch Libraries - Central, New Brighton, South and Upper Riccarton. See http://bit.ly/92iRPJ

Even though the libraries are still closed in the wake of the quake - people are still using it outside http://bit.ly/cdEolL

Carlton is closed with a yellow inspection sticker - but you can still sit out side in the cold and post on NBR as I am doing now...
