Men arrested in Christchurch for theft of emergency TelstraClear generators

UPDATED:  Two men have been arrested and have appeared in court for the alleged theft of the three emergency TelstraClear generators in Christchurch, the New Zealand Herald reported this morning.

The three generators power roadside cabinets that each feed up to 500 landline and broadband customers.  Spokesperson for TelstraClear David Courtney said the generators also re-charged the batteries of the cabinets, and that while he could not be sure whether the cabinets have lost power, the thieves put about three neighbourhoods at risk of losing landline and broadband services from Wednesday night onwards.  Landline service in particular were critical, he said.

The theft was "very frustrating" but TelstraClear continues to try and source other generators and Mr Courtney was unsure as to whether the three cabinets now have mains or generator power.

However he reported that one was returned last night, which was great news.  "Every generator helps," he said, since TelstraClear still have a number of sites without power.  He said he had heard of the arrests but had no further information.

The Herald reported the men were arrested last night and appeared in court this morning.  They have been remanded without bail until they reappear in court on March 28.

Three TelstraClear generators in Christchurch had been stolen over night, knocking out landline and broadband services to hundreds of customers.

Spokesperson David Courtney said the generators were powering road side cabinets that fed up to 500 TelstraClear landline and broadband customers for each cabinet. He said the company all ready had about 20 cabinets out when engineers assessed the network this morning and the theft will "potentially affect hundreds of people as they will not have any fixed-line services".

The generators' loss would mean that those customers connected to the three cabinets would lose service as the battery power ran down.   He said it was "very frustrating" since telecommunications was a "critical service" at such a time.

TelstraClear was already concentrating on sourcing more generators and replacing the three stolen would become a part of this effort.  The company would also start to look at ways to keep the generators more secure.

All the major phone companies have been flying extra generators into the quake-hit city to power celltowers and other telecommunications infrastructure. Telecom has flown in 33, with help from the Air Force.

NBR will update when further information is available.

Police say that overall "looting has been minimal".

Absolutely - stealing generators could cost lives. Scum

When they are found name them and show their faces on the TV , then leave the locals to deal to them !

Shoot them in Cathedral Square. They are the lowest form of scum with no chance of ever contributing to society

Bastards need to be hooked up to the generators they stole and fried!

While I understand that these are desperate times for many people and families in Christchurch, such acts of selfishness at the detriment to others in need is shameful.

Looting and stealing in a disaster hit area is NOT dealt with the normal Law rules and guarantees.
It is, universally, anywhere else in the world, dealt under Martial Law.
If caught in the act, the soldier/soldiers have orders to simply open fire on sight.
If captured, the trial is swift, by a Court Martial, and punishment swift and harsh...NEVER under 20 years.
Pls wake up, New Zealand, there is no right or place to the protection of Law for the scum of the Earth

Sniiper's got the right idea - name and shame them - then let the locals at them.
Same with the scum breaking into the dead woman's home whilst her kids are grieving on national TV.

Ar*eholes - bet they're Labour voters for sure!

I am one.
I like the Law and defend it.
I think that part of your comment was a tad unnecessary, inappropriate, and a bit carried over.
My regards to you Sir.

Impose martial law and shoot the bastards on sight.

Thats even being unkind to Labour Voters.
Scum like this would never have voted in their lives.

Agree to all of the above, but please this is no time for politics. Yes 20 years prison, and make an example of it.

Could they be stolen to order? All Custom Officers, do check all export containers with generators for proper documentations....

Disasters like this always bring out the best and the worst in people (by worst i mean the opportunists, scammers, looters) and isn't it unfortunate that the worst society has to offer aren't the ones lying in the mortuary. This is when the PC New Zealanders need to turn away and let the bad guys get what they deserve.

National State of emergency = time for martial law. It's a shame to have to waste time & bullets on such people, but they've made their beds.

I'm thinking that the chain gang should be bought back forthwith and the incarcerated made to clean up the city with their crime posted on the back of their overalls for all to see.

Look for the street with full power! Lights on hot & cold running water! Duh!!

Good idea! Particularly now that the Police have retrieved the generators and apprehended the offenders. The Police have denied bail - probably for the thieves protection...

we could always let then hang from a lamp post, would send a message to others

Tie them to a lamp post outside the Grand Chanceller, waiting for it to fall on them would be their punishment

That is the best idea so far, make them clean the city up brick by brick. untill the it is all done and then spend the rest of the time left in prison
