Unions plan nationwide employment law protest
Thousands of workers from Kaitaia to Bluff will stop work for two hours on Wednesday to attend union meetings protesting against the Government's employment laws, says the Council of Trade Unions (CTU).
The CTU has been vocal in its opposition to new employment laws, which include extending the 90-day probation period to all businesses, requiring greater justification for sick days and making changes to union access to workplaces.
The Employment Relations Amendment Bill passed its first reading in Parliament a couple of months ago.
The CTU said today the changes were "unfair, unnecessary and unworkable attacks on employment rights", and workers in over 25 towns and cities around the country would gather to make that point.
"Unions in New Zealand have vowed to campaign against these changes until these rights are restored," the union said.

The 90 day rule has been litigated by the Unions already. They lost, NZers liked it and they moved on. Suddenly its back on the agenda because its "being extended". Not likely. It being presented as the stalking horse for the real reason the Unions are mobilising - restrictions on union access to workplaces. Cynical and hopeless.
If Unions want access to workplaces they should do it through formal channels through negotiatons with the owners and managers of the workplaces.
Iwill bet my house that the unions or is it onions will not get any short pay that week ,just the workers.
The employer is continually being burdened with the "rights of workers" through a raft of regulatory requirements (and shoulders the associated costs).
Good news that finally the "employers rights" are being addressed.
On the heels of the Labour conference we now have the Unions attacking the Key Government because Goff cant. Wake up kiwis keeping the unions at bay, getting people to work and fair wages versus risk/reward for the employer is our key to start catching the Aussies, who have real Union Might to worry about. In good years bonuses for all, in bad year fair wages and all Kiwis can fly!!
The worst depression the world has seen since the 1930'S ,yet Johnnie Union puppet master aided and abetted by the Labour Party tells the teachers to go on strike, as well as most workers who know there are no free lunches, have to obey in fear of being blacklisted.
Where do i get cheap tickets to the Gold Coast to get away from all this ????
Good example of powerful unions is the demise of the car industry in USA.
They went down the toilet because of unreasonable union demands
