US congressman tweets his “secret” Iraq visit

A House Intelligence Committee member Twitters like an excited teen - and not from an Obama-level spy-phone either. Read all about it.

What is it about Twitter users and their compulsion to tweet (txt status updates to other users of the mobile blogging service)?

Our latest hapless tweeter is Republican congressman Peter Hoekstra, who joined a House of Representatives delegation to Iraq that arrived February 4.

Rep. Hoekstra, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, had been asked to keep the trip under his hat for security reasons. Like accompanying media, the Michigan representative had agreed not to disclose his location until after he had left Iraq.

But no sooner the congressman’s feet hit the tarmac when his fingers hit the keypad of his phone, updating his Twitter profile that anyone could (and still can) follow.

“Just landed in Baghdad,” tweeted Rep. Hoesktra, alerting his Twitter.com friends to his morning arrival. By February 6, the Congressional Quarterly had broadcast his presence to the world.

Rep Hoestra – whom the Quarterly notes is routinely trusted with the US government’s most closely guarded secrets – continued to provide detailed updates on his location to his Twitter friends, with many an exclamation mark and typo, until the evening of February 6. Whereupon his messages suddenly stopped.
