Vodafone pulls Google phone from NZ market

[UPDATE: Vodafone says the Magic will go back onsale today].

Backtracking on comments earlier today, Vodafone now says a "commercial issue" has led to the sudden disappearance of the HTC Magic Google phone from its website, and its abrupt withdrawl from retail stores.

This morning, a Vodafone spokeswoman said the HTC Magic was coming back, once supply issues had been resolved.

She laughed off reports that Google took offense at HTC Magic party pics, or that Apple has leaned on it to take the phone off the market.

But at midday, a Vodafone spokesman contacted NBR to say that a "commercial issue Vodafone is having" was responsible for the HTC Magic's sudden withdrawal.

He declined to comment on when, or if, the Magic would return to the New Zealand market, or whether the issue was with Google, or the phone's manufacturer, Taiwan's HTC, or a supplier inbetween.

He did scotch a rumour - heard by your correspondent from Parallel Imported - that Vodafone is in a payment dispute with HTC. (Incidentally, while temporarily out of stock - due to a straightfoward sell-out issue, Parallel Imported expects to have the Magic back in stock on Friday, for $1115.)

Earlier today, TVNZ tech commentator and blogger Ben Gracewood spied the mysterious disappearance of the HTC Magic from Vodafone’s website - curious given the level of hype the telco, and its agency, have built around the phone with the launch party, plus a nationwide treasure hunt, heavily promoted via Twitter, that saw 20 Magics given away.

The Magic was released on June 26, becoming the first Google Android-powered handset to hit New Zealand, at least through official channels (read NBR’s review here)

Mr Gracewood says he was asked, by Vodafone, to remove photos of the event from his website and wondered whether that could be because of inapproriate use of logos (see photo end of story).

This in turn sparked rumours around the net that Google had taken offense at the near-naked models (above) who adorned the HTC Magic launch party on June 24 - if not their state of undress, then the allegedly unauthorised use of the Google logo on their body paint.

Computerworld picked up the issue, adding a new layer of conspiracy: “Rumours are flying around that the HTC Magic launch so close to the iPhone one has angered Apple. As a result, Apple is said to have threatened to remove Vodafone's exclusive deal for the new iPhone range, due out this month.”

Vodafone head of events and marketing PR, Tessa Robertson, laughed at both suggestions.

Ms Robertson says Google loved the launch, and says Apple has absolutely not tried to influence what handsets Vodafone carries.

The HTC Magic was taken off Vodafone’s website simply because of "a commercial issue on Vodafone's side and we're working through the issues right now".

The Google phone is made and supplied by HTC, rather than Google. The company’s Android OS will feature on more phones later in the year, including models from Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Motorola.

UPDATE:
Anthony Petts, Sales and Marketing Director for HTC Australia and New Zealand, sent NBR the following comment from his Sydney office:

“The HTC Magic with Google has received a great response in the Australian market. We’re really encouraged by consumer uptake and continue to supply the device around the world. We do not comment on the businesses of our carriers and partners.”

Mr Petts confirms that the HTC Magic remains onsale at Vodafone Australia, but refuses to comment further.

Google has so far not responded to requests for comment.

'A supply issue' becuase Google HAS pulled the handset for the time being. No use denying the rumours ...

The HTC magic is a piece of junk anyhow and worse still its a first gen android phone - If the various phone blogs out there are to be believed there are much better android phones about to hit the market - I'll wait for one of those....

The iPhones exclusive to Vodafone??

But we're in deep deep discussions with Apple!!

parties with naked girls, free drink and dark rooms.

Why wasn't I invited?!

We are off the radar when it comes to Google's Android Market Place. Now, we can't even buy the damn thing here...

Definitely sounds like the Vodafone of old (e.g. Mysoginistic and style over any real substance) ...How about less semi naked girls and more focus fixing their crappy network? Whats the point point owning a flash handset like the Magic if vodafones network barely supports any of the handsets features such as 3G

They're having fun. In this gloomy bloody market what's wrong with that?

And if naked body painted girls = misogyny count me in. Me and Air NZ both.

I seem to have a less of an issue with naked, painted girls than with unattractive, naked, painted girls.

Count me out from that party. Ogres abound.

Bad week for Vodafone eh? First they are outed for ripping off their mobile customers, then they are busted for colluding with Telecom on mobile pricing, now they have been slapped across the head by Google and ordered to pull the Google phone. Ha, talk about a tough week at the office eh? Oh well, guess that's what you get for being so smug.

So you have used the second generation android phone have you?

I have. I'm still using it. Collector's item, maybe. It's a fantastic phone incidentally. See the review linked to in the review above.

You must watch TV3 Jim. Colluding's a crime and someone would be investigating if Telecom and Vodafone were seen to be working together. Nobody is, so you're now defaming them both. Good work. Your mother must be so proud.

Vodafone still have a far superior and faster network than Telecom will ever have. Telecom don't have the 2G "Backbone" that voda has, so if Telecom's network crashes, that's it, there is nothing to go back to.

Perhaps it has more to do with someone spotting that while VFNZ was selling the Magic for approx $1,000, or approx $500 if you take a 2 year 250min/month contract, VF Aus is hugely cheaper

We all know Vodafone and Telecom have been colluding on prices, TV3 have just had the balls to say it. If they're aren't colluding then explain why all the pricing is damn near exactly the same... 89c per min for calls, 20cents for text, Best Mate/Favorites...hmm no collusion there huh??

Ask any Kiwi on what they think of mobile pricing, especially compared to the rest of the world, and they will tell you Vodafone and Telecom are ripping us off. It was only a matter of time before Vodafone and Telecom were outed as the rip-off merchants that they are.

I'm glad TV3 called it a wrought rather than apologise. No doubt they've only done so cause Russell sent his cronies down to intimidate everyone. I hope Ernie's doing ok, poor bugger, no doubt the Vodafone henchmen have been all over him as well.

i think that she took a good and wise decision. i use often the mobile, to go on internet and yahoo and facebook. i not stay to much at home to have the opportunity to use the computer. so it is a big step to improve the mobile network. Toll Free Numbers
