Vodafone triples mobile data speed - for a few lucky Aucklanders

Vodafone has said this morning that the first of a trial group of Auckland customers have gone live on its HSPA+ network, and can expect mobile data download speeds of up to 16Mbit/s - that is, the same speed as most get from a landline DSL broadband connection, if they're lucky.

47 Auckland cellsites have been upgraded to the technology, all with fibre backhaul courtesy of the telco's partnership with Vector.

The trial will expand to include 100 Auckland customers.

The carrier says it will roll-out HSPA+ nationally during 2010, but has yet to commit to a more specific time timetable. It says urban areas will be upgraded first during the first few months of the New Year.

Telecom has pledged to upgrade its entire 3G network to support HSPA+ by Christmas.

A turbocharged version of the HSPA technology that underpins both Vodafone and Telecom's 3G networks today, HSPA+ triples the maximum theoretical data download speed to 21Mbit/s.

Neither Telecom nor Vodafone has so far elaborated on how it will adjust its mobile data pricing to accommodate such superfast mobile broadband. If plans are left unchanged, it would be easy for a customer to blow through their monthly data allowance within an hour.

To take advantage of HSPA+ pumping at 21Mbit/s, you must have a cellphone or data card that support the technology. There are several data cards available that support HSPA+ at 21Mbit/s, but no cellphones at present. Vodafone said today that it will add HSPA+ data sticks and cellphones to its range.

At this point, a specific Vodafone HSPA+ sim card is also required, restricting access to the 100 official trialists.

Today's 3G networks have a maximum theoretical top speed of 7Mbit/s, although NBR testing, and that carries out by others, typically finds both clocking less than half that bandwidth.

Telstra rolled out HSPA+ in selected Australian urban areas earlier this year, with 21Mbit/s support in some areas, and 43Mbit/s in others.

I would settle for good old 1.4 MBit/sec to be more available. I have used their data network since early 2006 and most places in Auckland are 2G, ie dial up speed. Vodafone are chasing headlines and should focus on delivering what they promise.

This is great news! But until it's released to the mass Public & both Vodafone & Telecom rehash their Data Caps / Pricing, it will be pointless having these "possible" 16Mbit Speeds........

@ Anonymous - 4:34pm....

Vodafone's 3G Network covers 97% of where NZer's Live, work & play, see for yourself here:

http://www.vodafone.co.nz/coverage/

So your information is incorrect.

This new HSPA+ Network *Trial* utilises fibre for the backhaul, not Microwave & is therefore able to provide faster speeds to more customers.

What device do you use to access Vodafone's 3G Mobile Network?

Does it support the two 3G Frequencies Vodafone use, namely 2100Mhz / 900Mhz UMTS?

Do yo use a Vodem Stick? If so - which one.

Have you tried locking the device to 3G only? Are you using the latest Firmware?

All of the above can affect the speed you experience....

Have you contacted Vodafone & logged a ticket with them so they can investigate the site / sites that you work off to see if there is a fault on the site / sites?

Lastly - no speeds are "promised" - this is the Official Vodafone statement on Mobile Broadband:

http://www.vodafone.co.nz/mobile-broadband/speed.jsp

NOTE: Data capacity and speed experienced may be slower than advertised speeds and can vary due to coverage, location, hardware and software configuration, capability and load of sites visited and general network and internet traffic.

I'm using Vodafone's 900 network and I get at least 1meg down constantly in areas outside Auckland CBD. Trying buying a device that uses both and you'll find marked improvement in speed.

As for HSPA+ I say, when can I buy a vodem? I'll have one.

I use a Nokia E71 phone as Modem all over New Zealand and have no issues with speed easy 800k up to 2mbps down at times

Isnt it funny how quickly Vodafone get a press release out after Infotech weekly ran a story about the huge amount of national HSPA+ upgrades that have already happened or are happening on Telecoms XT network. Isnt it even funnier how this is lapped up by gullable journalists like Keal and his NBR cronies. What I do know is that with XT I get fast 3G just about everywhere. Most of the feedback I've seen in comments sections like this over the years from Vodafone customers tends to always end up talking about their patchy 3G coverage.

Vodafone have been working on this for a long time, well before XT even launched. And it is understandable why you would get faster speeds on XT, there are only 160000 people using it nationally. You will probably find, as telecom CDMA customers migrate to the XT network your speeds will slow.

lol. im going back and forth between telecom and vodafone for 3g data. i cannt put up with vodafone anymore, im sorry. no more. voda does offer a large selections of handsets, but if the network doesnt provide enough coverage for those phones, what is the point of hving a high end phone on voda??? bye voda. i ve complained many times with no answer and solution. telecom is superior to your network in either speed and coverage.
