Vodafone's plan for the TelstraClear brand

Vodafone's plan for the TestraClear brand?

Kill it off.

It seems no value is seen in dual-branding, beyond a short term transition period.

"Subject to regulatory approvals of the deal, the TelstraClear brand will be removed from the market over an 18 month period," a Vodafone spokeswoman told NBR this morning.

The awkward TelstraClear moniker sprang from the 2001 merger of Wellington-based, Telstra-owned cable operator TelstraSaturn and Clear Communications (which Telstra bought from BT) in 2001.

Sponsorships in the balance?
TelstraClear has various sponsorship and naming rights arrangements, which include the TelstraClear Pacific events centre in Auckland, and arrangements with the Royal NZ Ballet and Te Papa.

On these, the Vodafone spokeswoman said, "Obviously the deal is still subject to regulatory approvals. We won’t be making immediate changes to the sponsorship portfolio and over time we will look to align TelstraClear’s sponsorship properties with our overall portfolio."

TelstraClear dropped its signature Black Caps sponsorship, inherited from Clear Communications, in 2004.

Telstraclear's marketing could be worse.

They might, for example, use a major event involving their sponsorship of a team, to hire a prominent sports figure to drive a pink fist car around telling people to not have sex.

That, after all, is what Telecom's advertising has included in the last year.

Far out is everything about Telecom mistakes? Thank God we have one New Zealand owned and headquatered telco.

... which will soon be named Teltra-com!

I thought everyone at Telstra Clear hated Vodafone for their bully boy ways in the mobile market, Vodafone kept TC mobile uncompetitive for years. Culture clash train wreck ahead.

that was a long time ago - they've been back with VF for two years now.

It's to be expected. They did something similar back when they bought #iHug

Telecom is NOT new zealand owned ! Duhh

...and its good bye to Alan Freeth. The guy was a d*ck head from the moment he entered the business and only the talent of the now departed Michael Boggs kept him afloat.
