Wellingtonians post the most bad restaurant reviews
"I wouldn't trust an online review anyway. Could have been written by any punter, including the competition down the road."
Featured commentBUSINESSDESK: Wellingtonians are the most likely group of New Zealanders to use online media to rate a negative dining experience, the latest nationwide American Express Dining Survey shows.
More than 50% of people polled in the capital said they would go online to post a bad review. That compares to 35% of Kiwis nationwide who would use social media to rate their negative dining experiences within hours of finishing a meal and 27% who do so immediately.
Top restaurateurs in the capital say they can cope with online feedback.
"There is nothing to be afraid off," Mike Egan, owner of Wellington's Boulcott St Bistro, Osteria del Toro and Monsoon Poon restaurants, told BusinessDesk. "People used to stand around and talk about their experiences. Now people talk about them online."
"There is a huge range of online forums – people are more likely to trust their own Facebook groups. You can't hide behind the anonymity of review sites."
Some 56% of Kiwis who use social media to rate their dining experience were more likely to review a pleasant time. That is still not good news for the hospitality industry since happy diners traditionally take longer to boast about their experiences.
The nationwide survey of 1000 kiwis found people who frequently dine out – once a week or more – were more likely to be influenced by online reviews when choosing their next dining destination.
"It's crucial for restaurant owners to be mindful of what is being said about them online, especially as their most frequent customers, and therefore arguably the most valuable, seem to be the most influenced by online reviews," Restaurant Associaton chief executive Marisa Bidois says.
Cafes and restaurants need to be online themselves and take control of their presence on the internet, she says.
Have a strong voice, respond constructively and quickly to criticism, and remember it is meant to be a two-way process so rather than sit on the feedback. See what changes can be made, she advises.
In August, the American Express Dining survey found that 93% of New Zealanders still eat out despite the tough economic climate.
Residents in Wellington and Auckland were most likely to eat out at least once a week, with patrons in the capital making the most use of discount dining deals.

Call me a fogey but i've never read an online restaurant review yet and we dine out at least once a week. If a restaurant doesn't measure up we simply don't go back. I wouldn't trust an online review anyway. Could have been written by any punter, including the competition down the road.
I have put negative reviews when I was not happy with the experience, also posted them on facebook and tell all my friends and colleagues and will not return to the cafe/bar or restaurant.
I do receommned restaurants where I had a good experience, mostly face to face and will organise eating out with friends on the places that I had a good experience and will return there many times. I eat out about 4 to 5 times a week, brunch and dinner.
I am particularly likely to post about thse restaurrants that had a one day type voucher but distictively treat customers with contempt
I post reviews when the experience was really bad, so have only done it a couple of times. I don't read them often but if I read a bad one I take notice, oh and I also eat out at least once a week.
i also read reviews on restaurants and hotels before booking in, although not all the time.
I just use the iPhone app TheInsider to find out the best deals at all the bars and restaurants in Wellington!
People, all eateries have their off-days; don't take a reviewer's word as gospel.
me and the missus have always gotten fish and chips once a week for years from remuera fisherys and have never thort about posting reviews as always very good.
Mate, their batter is very average. Try, Catch a Fish, in Parnell. Their quality is more better.
see you lot are fast to post the bad but bloody slow to post the best - shame on you.
I sometimes ask my friends for recomendations but even then I still like to do a bit of research online simply because if my friends like a restaurant does not necessarily mean that I will like it too.
There is no shortage of review sites, a website that I use on a regular basis to read restaurant reviews is MenuMania.co.nz
Shame on the people who only post reviews when they've had a bad experience, I just think that's bad karma.
