Windows XP cheats death, again

Microsoft has again revised Windows XP’s date with destiny. The kill date for Vista’s predecessor was originally set for June 30 this year, then pushed out to January 31 next year.

Now, the operating sytem will die another day. Again. The new date for XP to shuffle off this mortal coil is June 30, 2009, Microsoft announced Saturday New Zealand time.

Windows XP’s enduring popularity saw its original June 30, 2008 deadline tweaked. After that date, XP disappeared from retail shelves around New Zealand, and around the world, and PC makers stopped offering XP as an option on new PCs.

But home buyers could still get the “old” version of Windows through a loop hole: those who choose the more expensive Ultimate edition of Vista also bought the right to “downgrade” to Windows XP.

And larger businesses on volume license plans were allowed to keep buy XP until January 31, 2009.

Now, Microsoft has announced the January 31 cut-off will only apply to “system builders” or smaller PC assemblers.

Global brands like Dell and HP will be allowed to offer Windows XP right through until June 30 next year – by which time Windows Vista’s successor, Windows 7 will be just months away (the alpha version of Windows 7 will be released October 27).

Have used XP for years and can see no user advantage in Vista - and Vista needs a big boost in hardware to perform adequately. If I can't get XP I might have to buy a Mac of install Linux!!

I do not want Vista, I am hanging on to my XP

I used to have XP, until I couldn't recover from from the Toshiba disks.

I stuck in a free Linux Ubuntu disk in and if a few minutes the PC was back up and running. I'll only go back to Windoz if I buy a new PC and immediately install Linux Ubuntu.

I prefer XP over Vista any day, don't see why Microsoft want to get rid of it!

Having installed (foolishly) Vista on a clients computer it has caused nothing but headaches, from its 'new and improved' backup utility to it's reluctance play nicely with NAS drives and XP PC's. Personally I also use Ubuntu and many times it has rescued lesser OS's such as XP. As far as Windows is concerned though, my preference is XP, which I only use for games anyway though, even if alot of my favourite games from my mispent youth won't run on it anyway!

What does MS ship dates, cut dates and software all have in common? Completely unreliable. Market share from illegial practices, not quality.

Mac beats the pants off of Vista and XP. The world would be a better place if Mac ruled it.
