Technology billionaires bounce back: who’s top

A resurgent Nasdaq has helped the geek crowd regain its mojo on Forbes’ annual list of the world’s richest people.

Top of the heap is Mexican telecommunications monopolist Carlos Slim, who moved a nose (well, $US500 million) ahead of previous champ Bill Gates.

Mr Slim’s wallet is about to get a little fatter, too. The mobile mogul recently lent the New York Times $US250 million at a nosebleed 14%.

Not that Mr Gates is hurting. Although now number two, the Microsoft co-founder saw his wealth increase by a tidy $US13 billion during 2009.

50,000 Kiwis using Windows 7 pre-launch

More than 50,000 New Zealanders have downloaded and registered for the beta version of Microsoft’s Windows 7 to be officially launched later this month.

Microsoft’s Ben Green said a record number of businesses and individual consumers had downloaded the software onto their PCs, of which there are about two million throughout the offices and homes of New Zealand.

Mr Green said the amount of people who had tested the new software and provided feedback on it and further suggestions for development was “very positive.”

Meet Lauren: she’s young, she’s hip, she’s “not cool enough to be a Mac person”

Microsoft fired off the latest video in its ad war with Apple.

The story so far: Apple’s Mac Guy vs PC guy ads, featuring Drew Barrymore’s hip, Gen Y boyfriend Justin Long as Mac Guy, and the prematurely middle-aged John Hodge as PC guy, were a run-away hit.

Hart overtakes Murdoch - now Australasia's richest

New Zealanders can brag to the Aussies about at least one thing – Graeme Hart is now richer than any Australian, according to Forbes magazine.

The magazine’s The World’s Billionaires 2009 report sees Mr Hart, owner of a packaging empire that includes Carter Holt Harvey, jump from 201 to 110 in the rankings of the world’s richest people, at an estimated wealth of $US4.5 billion.

This puts him 22 places ahead of media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who is valued at $US4 billion.
